Hello - Considering Lap Band - NYC

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone -

I've been reading a bit about the Lap Band surgery and yesterday went to see my Primary Care Doc. He agreed that this would be a good option for me.

He referred me to the NYU Program for Surgical Weight Loss. I'm scheduled to go to the Information Session next week - which is apparently Step 1.

If anyone has had experience or insights they'd like to share - I'm all ears, and would appreciate any recommendations.

I'll continue to read this board and research the internet for info as there certainly seems to be a lot of info.

Thanks Very Much.

Benbax

Hi Benbax, welcome to the lapband forum. The lapband is a great tool. My weight loss has been a little slower than I would have liked. I am losing 1 lb a week. So keep in mind all of us are different. Remember its a tool. I love my band though. I've lost 32 lbs in 6 months. The first time in my life I have lost without trying. Good luck.

Hi Bebax and fellow New Yorker..I am 4 weeks post op and it's the best decision I ever made. Took me a couple of years to have the nerve. You'll be seeing a string of doctors before the surgery to get clearance. If you have any specific questions let us know. This site has helped me quite a bit.

Welcome! My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday. I researched the different options for about 2 years myself. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Hi there Benbax . So first off, the band is by far the best thing that I have ever done for myself. Of course there are some serious difficulities along the way, it's certainly not easy, you have to work very hard, but you will have a tool that when used properly has the ability to help you loose the weight. Also, I've heard amazing things about the docs at NYU - Dr. Fielding and Dr. Ren are supposed to be top of the field, so you'll certainly be in good hands with them. Good luck, and keep reading from this board, there is more info here than you could ever need.

Welcome Benbax

you have come to the right place for support, inspiration and information. it is great that you have found us. I have been banded for a year and totally, utterly, completely love it...I have never regretted it for a moment. I am getting a new lease on life and am now able to participate in things I never was able to before...there are still sacrifices to be made and it hasn't been an easy process but it has been WAY worth it for me...I hope it will be the same for you! I look forward to hearing of your progress!

hi benbax,

i am going to the nyu program as well. my surgery date is 1/8/07 with dr. fielding. i have to be on a 2-wk liquid diet before the surgery--that starts next tues. therefore, this is my "goodbye to food" week....i keep thinking that each time i eat ANYTHING. pathetic.

anyway--it's a good program--dr. ren and dr. fielding are 2 of the world's most experienced surgeons--or so i've heard (and so i hope) and they seem to have a first class staff.

the process is:

1) go to the public information session (you need to call and be added to their list).

2) go to their psychologist for clearance

3) have your dr. send various medical history information pages to the dr.'s office

3) go see the nutritionist and p.a. at the surgeon's office.

and THEN

5) see the surgeon--then make your appt. for surgery, and get insurance coordinated.

if you have any questions--drop me a line!

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have now gone to the Information Seminar, and have seen the psychologist and gotten clearance. Next step is to have a full physical and take the results and meet with the Nutritionist and then the surgeon. I am feeling really good about this decision. Thanks all!

hi

i've just started considering maybe having this procedure done when i get vacation this summer. have an appt in 2 weeks to see my pcp and discuss further consultation. with a surgeon. i am with the mkmg. has anyone used a surgeon thru them?

i am very nervous and worry about recuperation and and long term issues. where do i begin with intelligent questions to my doctor. what are the differences between this procedure and regular gastric bypass, etc. also what about gall bladder issues when losing weight too quickly?

Hey Benbax,

I used Dr. Fielding and he's AMAZING! I couldn't feel any better about my decision to have the surgery, and to have done it with him. Feel free to email me if you have any questions at all.

Good luck!!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
