Length of Hospital Stay

Recommended Posts

My insurance only covers a 1 night stay in the hospital. I'm having my surgery at 7am on a Friday so at least it's earlier in the day. Based on what I've been reading, seems like many people have a 2 night stay? Has anyone had a 1 night stay? How was it leaving the next day. I'm especially nervous as I'm also having my gallbladder removed as I have a couple gallstones that have never given me issues but my surgeon feels it would be best to remove it to avoid a 2nd surgery. Please-can anyone help calm my nerves about my short hospital stay??? :-)

A lot if people do only one night in.. Heck some people here had it as an out patient! Not that I would want that..:P

Well anyway my insurance approved 1 day also, but my surgeon keeps his patents 2, so after the stay when I got the "bill" the hospital said that it was medically necessary and then it was paid :)

Was 2 days for me becasue 24 hours before they can give you a liquid food to drink and then they needed test by use of CAT scan, were you drink a thick Fluid that shows them real time your stomach pouch working, then realease was after a passing aproval that it all is in working order.

I wouldn't run off having had a gallbladder removed, you should consider taking on the extra bills, or using them as wallpapers, luck to you in solving it though with insurance people too.

I stayed one day and I was fine. To me, the worst part was the anesthesia wasn't completely out of my system, which made me very nauseous. The pain wasn't so bad, just uncomfortable. Walking helped me recover and helped get rid of the gas bubbles. My timeframe was surgery 9am on 4/16/13, discharged 4/17/13 around 1pm. Could have left sooner, but I had to wait for the nutritionist.

Two days, insureance letter says approved for one day, but I ain't sweating it -- that's why we pay the surgeon (and his staff) the big bucks! We got enough to worry about.

I had a 4 night stay. I didn't really have any complications, but I was worried that I wouldn't get in enough Water if I was sent home so soon, and I wasn't having any BM.

A lot of people go home the next day and are fine. Just pay very close attention to your body

I think it is standard with a lot of insurance policies to approve one night - mine was the same way. However, if they feel it is medically necessary, your surgeon can deem another night "medically necessary" and get it covered. Don't sweat it at this point - your surgeon should make the right call. I was totally fine just staying one night - I was ready to go home the next day.

Mizz, I only had 1 night in the hospital, it was no problem. I have had numerous surgery this was a piece of cake compared to others. You will do just fine, and look at all the benefits you will have after surgery.

Most US stays are 1 night because that's what insurance dictates. If needed your doc will get extra days for you. MX docs require 2 or more nights

I was self pay and the cost included up to two nights in the hospital, I only stayed one. I CHOSE to stay one. Like you, I had surgery at 7 AM on a Friday and I stayed until about 4PM on Saturday afternoon. I felt good enough to leave. I rested better at home and I had NO concerns, or else I would have stayed another night. I had been able to use the bathroom, sip broth and Water and passed the leak test. I had a one week check up at Dr. Davidson's office, he took part of the staples out and then I had another follow up at 2 weeks. That is when he took out the rest of them. I hope this helps!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
