I hear ya... same thing happened to me. I rarely had heartburn pre-sleeve. It started for me right around 2 weeks post-op as well. I would take a Tums and that would settle it down (it would wake me up in the middle of the night). Finally called my surgeon and he put my Prilosec OTC twice a day (I take the generic, Omeprazole and get it at costco - $15 for 48). Worked like a charm and I have been completely heartburn free ever since. Call your doctor and see what he/she recommends you take.

This is very normal. You tend to see an increase in acid reflux for the first 3-4 months and then you should see it taper off. Start on a PPI immediately and it will help! My surgeon gives a prescription for the PPI but there are a ton that are OTC. Good luck!

I had really bad heartburn and gastritis about 12 years ago, but since then (other than when pregnant) had no issues. As soon as I was sleeved it was back with a vengeance! :(

Definitely do the Prilosec or the generic omeprazole. Lifesaver!

I rarely had heart burn before surgery, but boy did it kick in just a few days post-op! My Dr. has me on omeprezole, which seems to do the trick.

I'll echo what the others said. Expect this for 3-4 months. Your new sleeve is still producing a lot of stomach acid like it did before, but now it has a smaller space to do so AND its also trying to heal from the massive cutting it endured. My Dr assures me things will balance out, so in the meantime a little pill is worth it. :)

I had my sleeve on 4/24/13...and have lost 30 pounds. My only problem is the reflux and hearburn, i feel like my food gets stuck, so I rarely eat (not that I am hungry). I take Nexium everyday, but it doesnt seem to help.....just a little frustrated.

I know not not to drink with your food but I feel that's the only way I can get things unstuck...I take little sips with my food and it seems to help a lot

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
