Has anyone tried yoga as an effective exercise option?

Recommended Posts

As I have said a few times on a few threads, I had extensive neurosurgery and spinal surgery and have not been medically released to resume my elliptical use or run. I am thinking about yoga as an option to tone and lose weight.

I haven't, but I'm thinking about it. I have lots of mobility issues and it might be do-able for me, or at least a modified version.

I have an appt with my surgeon on Wednesday and will run it by him. Although he wants me to resume some type of exercise program. I'll also ask my physical therapist but wanted to see if anyone has had an success with yoga.

OMG.....my yoga experience taught me that I am shallow....ok I knew that LOL but really....yoga maybe with someone who isn't all nuts about it, but those who are serious.....gad they're ummm well "nuts" about it.

I took a yoga class with a rather famous person. She's rather irreverent in person and on camera so I thought it wouldn't be too bad...if her yoga person could handle her she'd be fine with me. But we had to gad like hold our hands in some sort of prayer to gad knows what god, and then "center ourselves". Hell I didn't find my self in the 80's when it was popular, so centering is likely not going to take.

I ended up dying laughing...tears running down my eyes, cuz the other person was making faces at me during the centering moments. It was something akin to hell and heaven at the same time. Hilarious...but could I ever take a yoga class seriously....NEVER.

I did do Pilates though (on a reformer) and LOVED it! It stretches everything you need, works you hard...and you don't have to pray to a dang thing!

My physical therapist suggested Water aerobics, but I am still very self conscious about my moobs. My wife said it would work great for me if I can get up the confidence to go into the pool in a class. How did Pilates work for you?

I don't know if I could do hot yoga. I think the scent might be a bit much for me. How did you handle that issue?

Buplee- I honestly think that you'll like the Water aerobics BUT, I totally feel you on being self conscious! I haven't done Pilates in a while but as soon as I can after surgery, I WILL!

I also love spinning, have you ever tried it?

Depends on the studio-- avoid ones with carpet. The smell there will knock you out. Anywhere else it just remindse of the smells at the gym, not great but not terrible at all.

I do yoga on a weekly basis, but probably not as much I would like to. My primary motivation to do yoga is to improve my flexibility and mobility. It is definitely helping! My favorite type is hot yoga, but also enjoy hatha, yin and vinyase classes. Hot yoga is a great exercise and will have you sweating and exhausted, at least until you get a strong core (not me yet). Burns an uber amount of calories. Good luck!

Another tip is to look for deals on group on. I can find 300 dollars worth of classes for 15-20 dollars. Just keep looking as I have found two local yoga studios with deals like this. I purchased one that will give me like 6 months of yoga for 17 dollars.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
