Deciding on surgery knowing I will be a slow loser - help!

Recommended Posts

So I'm 235 and my weight seems to always just stay close to the same no matter what I do. Major diet attempts lose me maybe 3 pounds. Tried South Beach 2x and in the first two week "boot camp" they say you can expect to loose 8-13 pounds-- I lost 3.

My metabolism is shot from a lifetime of dieting so I just know I will be a frustrated slow loser. I have my surgeon appt. in 3 days' date=' and need to commit lots of and get a surgery date.

I'm just second guessing my need for the surgery, thinking it will just be a very frustrations experience based on my other attempts to loose weight. I was totally committed, but after reading forums for months, I am starting to waffle. I really am not sure if this surgery will do what I'm hoping, and I have had so many times where I have REALLY tried, only to lose just a few pounds.

Any advice? I'm feeling kind of desperate. Thanks.[/quote']

I believe you really need to be ready, willing and able to push through the barrier! You are asking advice? No one can give that to you but you. I went back and forth on should I, should I not?

I went for it May 10. Glad I did! This is not an "easy ticket". I will have to work hard to achieve my goals and I am delighted to have this on my side as a tool. Not sure if this is helpful! If you are not ready then don't do it cause you can't commit and therefore will struggle further!

Just my opinion

Checking back in here, glad to see some more posts!

I have my surgeon meeting and psych tomorrow. My mind is pretty made up to have the surgery but I plan not discuss these concerns with him. I'm hoping he has plenty of stories about people of our size doing really well!

Had a long talk with hubby and we are both in a good place with what to expect.

It's just hard to get your mind around the process when you read accounts of people breezing right through the first few months with no troubles, then you read other accounts of people having nothing but misery with nausea,, vomiting, not being able to eat anything, etc. Kind of hard to prepare your mind when you have no idea how the process will go FOR YOU.

I understand...it is true that the experiences vary widely for different people--even what you can eat or tolerate so many weeks or months out...what you are doing now is the best path I think; i.e., meeting with the drs and discussing your concerns...consulting with your husband (I didn't have that support since I am single), and researching and asking questions...hope all goes well with your dr visits

Following up, today I had my appt with the surgeon Dr. Foote. He was great and took the time to answer all of my questions. He is one of the midwest's best sleeve surgeons, kind of a pioneer. His competence was obvious and his answers to my questions put me at ease, I'm ready to move forward with confidence.

Insurance approval, then scheduling surgery, yay!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
