Hello there...

I'm a new member entering my third week post surgery. So far things are going very well. Slow and steady weight loss, no issues with recovery or subsequent diet but of course I knew that I'm going to screw things us somehow - it was just too easy ...

So today. first day back at work, had some lunch of chicken salad and afterward some gum to cleanse my palette and long and behold I've .... swallowed the gum! Now what, any ideas how it's going to affect me? What am i to expect? Blockage, potential leak? I am freaking out ...

I figured I'll reach out to the community before contacting my NUT or surgeon ... so far it's been about 20 minutes and I'm ok ... just feel like I have something stuck in my throat.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

-d

I don't think you are going to die. :)

Sure sounds like something I would do. I would say though, give your Doc a call and see what they say. I would think it might just be hard to digest at this point but better to be safe and let them know, they make have be able to give you something if they think it could be a problem.

Good luck, let us know how you are doing.

I am pretty sure you are going to be ok, but I would be traumatized as well, and on your first day back too.

Please let us know what the Dr. says.

Feel better and don't worry too much.

Thank you for giving me hope! :) I'll try to get in touch with the Dr. and hopefully I haven't made a huge mess. Never again am I touching gum!!! It's too nerve wrecking to think that I might be sabotaging my healthy by not paying attention.

Still breathing ,,,

YES, you are going to die. :P

I'm pretty sure this will not be the cause, and hopefully it will be quite some time before that day comes.

There really isn't much you do at this point. It will pass through your system like it has in the past. You'll be fine.

You should definitely call your doctor--mine doesn't allow gum chewing for the first 12 weeks specifically because there can be a concern about swallowing it. It's not a foregone conclusion that something will go wrong because you did swallow it, but definitely something to get checked out.

Thanks everyone - you are the best! I did speak with the nurse at the surgeon's office and he confirmed that I should be fine. As long as I'm not vomiting or having issues with drinking, the gum will run it's trail to my system and that should be the end of the story. Lesson learned!!! :)

Mine said no gum at all.... hahaha.. yeah right!

I think all it does is move into your small intestines anyway. The stomach can't really digest gum very well.

Hope everything comes out okay! :) Glad that the nurse was reassuring.

Glad you are ok! My doc doesn't allow it because it stimulates saliva, which in turn makes your stomach think food is coming and it produces more acid. Tooth brush and paste in future :-)))))))

My doc had me chewing gum in the hospital after surgery! Even though it made me drool and made me nauseous. I hated it. It is so funny how different doctors say different things. I'm glad everything is going to come out all right in the end :D

Thanks for your input. I agree, it is amazing how the instructions vary based on who did your surgery...

I was actually considering Listerine Breath Strips that you simply place on your tongue and they simply dissolve... any thoughts?

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
