Only down 1 lb. 4 days post-op. Am I going to be a slow loser?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I have had a very good VSG experience so far but I am only down one pound and I am on Clear Liquids. I was told repeatedly that I would definitely lose between 30 and 40 pounds the first month. Has any one else started slowly like me and still had a great weight loss the first month? Or if this an indication that it's going to be a very slow process. I would appreciate hearing what experiences you've all had after getting off to a slow start. Thanks so much!

You'll still be losing Water weight from the IV fluids you got in hospital. Some people find themselves 10lbs+ heavier post surgery. It will come off very quickly, don't worry :)

There is no way to tell from this information if you are going to be a slow loser, but what you are experiencing is normal. I came home heavier than when I went in, then about two weeks later lost 10 pounds in a week. However, I lost about 25 pounds the first month. I also don't know your weight, but 30-40 pounds is a pretty big expectation. It might happen, but it might not, either. I think the worst thing we can do to ourselves is have unrealistic expectations because then we are continuously disappointed. Wish I had figured that out a little sooner :) Good luck.

Cococoocon,

First of all you are what we call a light weight and will not drop weight as fast as heavier people. 40 lbs in the first month is very ambicious. Try to concentrate more on how you feel and how your clothes fit. Best of luck.

Hi

40lbs in the first month is a lot to loose In a month. I think I lost 15lbs. I say just keep positive and focus on hydration and keep telling your positive story. Don't let the scale disappointed you. Since i just recently I broke long stall by 7 pounds! Be prepared to hit those stalls too. While Your body is adjusting you will loose inches first! And more importantly your body is working to keep you in good health with healing from major surgery.

When you are in the hospital, they pump you full of fluids. I think it helps to make sure that you don't get too dehydrated the first few days after surgery. Give yourself a little more time. And if you ARE heavier, you will lose a little faster. But every body is different.

Give yourself another week and then weigh yourself.

I'm not sure where you heard 40 lbs the 1st month, but that's definitely the exception and not the rule! I lost 20 the first month and my team was very happy with that loss. Like others have said, right now you are dealing with Fluid balance issues, true weight loss will come in time. It's way too early to be this concerned with the scale ;) follow your program and the weight will come at its own pace.

Relax a bit, the surgery itself isn't going to magically make the weight disappear. After 4 days, you still have lots of fluids in you from the surgery. To get that weight to drop, you got to get moving around and go about doing what you can to be really active. Stay hydrated and stay off the scales for a while. It is easy to get impatient, but it will take some time before you see any real type of loss.

Actually it is the surgeon himself, and his staff, who keep saying definitely at least 15 and up to 20 kg which is at least 33 up to 44 pounds the first month. I keep questioning it and they keep reassuring me. It seems awfully high to me too. As for exercise I walked two miles yesterday, and over a mile today according to my pedometer and I plan to increase up to four miles during the first month pre-op. I'm in India so the diet might be a bit different. I can only have transparent liquids for the first week home. Fresh strained coconut Water, apple juice, chicken stock, vegetable stock, lentil cooking water. These caloric liquids I can have a total of a pint and a half of per day. Add to that a quart and a half of water and Chrystal Light. After that is prescribed four weeks of a blended diet. By the way, my surgeon worked in the USA for many years and has done over 4000 surgeries, but only about 1000 sleeves. He has the reputation to be the best in the country. I guess I'll know soon enough! Thanks so much to everyone for your feedback.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
