My life will change on May 21, 2013. I am 36 years old. I will be having a sleeve gastrectomy performed in Houston, Texas by Texas Laparoscopic Consultants with Dr. Sherman Yu, MD, FACS. I am 5'8 in height, and weigh 285 lbs. I have medical insurance with United Healthcare but they won't cover the surgery. Therefore, my Medicare will be paying it. I am diabetic, have cholesterol, and unfortunately suffered a stroke back in 2010 which left me partially paralyzed. I have been overweight my whole life and the smallest I can recall was me at 220lbs.

I am excited and scared at the same time, but I know that this surgery can and will improve my life. I have been a member of this site for a few months but have been hesitant in introducing myself and sharing my story. However, here I am and thids is my introduction...

My UHC policy has a weight loss surgery clause and therefore will not cover it.

Oh ok. I know I had to switch my second insurance, as my dr advised me that the one I started with was very strict and turned folks down for gaining a pound.

I felt the same. Scared and happy at the same time. I wish you all the best with your surgery and recovery.

We have a lot in common! My surgery is may 21, I'm 33 and live in Dallas. Start my pre op liquid diet tomorrow. That is the part I'm dreading, not post op. good luck to you!

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
