Has anyone had their gall bladder removed at the same time as the sleeve?

Has anyone had their gall bladder removed at the same time you were being sleeved?

Both my mom and my sister had gall stones and had their gall bladders removed. I haven't ever had gall stones, but I'm worried that I'll get them with the rapid weight loss of the operation, and then I'll have to have a separate operation to remove my gall bladder. I was wondering if my sleeve surgeon would consider removing it at the same time, but he may not want to remove a healthy organ, even if it might get gall stones in it later.

I've also read somewhere that there is medication available to prevent your gall bladder from acting up after surgery. I'd like to hear more about this also if anyone has any knowledge of it.

BTW...I won't be sleeved for 6 more months due to insurance dietary requirements....so I'm looking at late December 2013 for my surgery.

I will be...on June 5. My gallbladder IS acting up and has been for some time. Not stones, just over production, then it stops working for some time, then again with the over production and pain. I am not sure if I am more excited about the little sucker coming out or the sleeve happening. lol.

You may have to remind me in a month, but I will let you know what all happens and how it goes. :)

I did, but it was because I had gall stones that were revealed during my pre-op abdominal ultrasound. I didn't realize I had them, but I had been having upper back pain occasionally for awhile and didn't realize that's what it was. SO glad I had it out. One less thing, Good luck with your surgery.

I had my gallbladder removed while getting my sleeve. I also had a hernia repaired. I honestly dont think it made it any worse than having the sleeve alone. Im glad I got it all over with at the same time!

I didn't have my gallbladder removed because i have no problems with it. I am on actigall twice a day for 6 months to help prevent gallstones. My doctor puts everyone with a gallbladder on that during the phase of rapid weight loss.

Well, if he decides not to take it out, I'll ask him to put me on actigall. Thanks for all your responses!

I was sleeved 4/23, had my gallbladder removed and a hiatal hernia repair. No complications, took 3 weeks off from work but could have easily returned by week 2. I was in pain for about a week and a half. Best to remove it now so your surgeon doesn't have to go back in in several months, open your healing incisions, to remove it then. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
