I asked my Dr. at our initial consultation if you can gain weight back after the sleeve? He told me the new stomach can not stretch more than 5%. At my psych eval, I mentioned that & the psychologist was floored; said he knew people that gained it all back after the sleeve! That scares me.

Curious what others' bariatric surgeons told them about possibility of weight gain?

My doctor, Dr. Kuhn, also sad the max. you could expect to lose is 80% excess body weight (on his web site, it says 70%).. Yet, on the forums, I see people who have lost more weight. Wondering if that is a rare occurrence?

The sleeve doesn't have to stretch for you to be able to gain all the weight back. It's all about what you eat and drink. The surgery won't keep you from eating ice cream or drinking Coke all day long if you decide to not pay attention to your doctor's recommendations. And high calorie easily digestible junk foods like that can easily slide right past the restriction.

As far as how much you can lose, there is no magic number for that. The average weight loss for sleeve patients is around 60-70% of excess weight (depends on which study you read). But remember, it's an average. There are plenty who lose 100% or even a bit more of excess weight. There are also several who don't lose the weight for whatever reason.

If you go by the charts I lost about 87% of my excess. The charts must have been made by willowy super models. I am in extremely good shape now but it says I could lose another 20. Some of that is spare skin and the chart doesn't allow for big muscles.

The sleeve doesn't stretch much but if you eat crapola in small increments incessantly you can defeat it. The remedy? Don't.

At 15 months out, I've lost 67% of my weight. I haven't gained any weight back, but can see that it could easily happen, with poor food choices.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
