Protein shakes after surgery

Recommended Posts

Just had my surgery on Monday the 6th... I had a schedule from then nutritionist of what to eat and drink and when ...I tried following it the first day home and ended up in severe pain from apparently trying to drink to much to soon .

I can hardly finish one Protein drink a day..,and not

Because of taste.

Any one else having this issue and is it ok ?

  1. I have this issue and I had my surgery the 29th...i can't drink an entire protien shake but i'm supposed to drink two per day. I don't now if it's okay but I did figure out how too make my shakes smaller with more powder so I make a 50 gram protien shake in the mornings and drink it in thirds. This way I know Im getting my protien...I tried doing the whey isolate but it made me feel ill...so this what I finally found works for me..took me a week out of surgery though to make it work :)

I am 2 weeks out. Today I ate a quarter cup of cottage cheese and 4 crackers. I felt no sickness or feeling full. I did however experience some diarrhea afterwards. Is this normal that it didn't make me feel full or sick??

I have been out 21 days post OP and I am just been advanced to adding egg whites and cottage cheese and ricotta cheese..I have notice depending on where you go the diets are different..my opinion is don't eat that much at ounce even if it don't make you sick.I can't eat more than four spoons of yogurt or apple sauce at once or I will be in pain..

Hi, I'm Julie I was sleeved on May 6th also and am having the same problem! I loved the shakes before and I'm eating my pruree's okay, but the shakes hurt my belly.... Can't get Protein in and I hate drinking all the time... It's all a learning process and I'm sure it will come together eventually... My nutritionist said (yesterday) than dumping it in chocolate pudding would be okay and I'm doing that.. It's all that works for me so far... PS I'm using Body Fortress!! I was thinking a different brand might help... IDK!

Thats called dumping syndrome. Diarrhea or vomiting is caused by too much glucose or carbs. Our new stomachs dont absorb large amounts of sugar and carbs.

The surgeon Im going with said that dumping is only with the bypass not the sleeve...

Yes you can get dumping syndrome with the sleeve. You can get dumping syndrome without any surgery at all. Read a medical journal too.

The prevalence of dumping syndrome is lower with the sleeve but 100% possible.

Also surgeons talk to us like we wont understand if they go into detail. When they learn that you too are a professional in the medical field, they they are more candid in conversation.

They dont tell you everything because people tend to panic with too much info.

Dumping syndrome is the reason they want us on low sugar everything. Also many bariatric patients are diabetics too and are very prone to dumping syndrome even before surgery.

Every case of diarrhea is not dumping syndrome of course but post gastrectomy patients are at higher risk for it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
