Rena's got this 274 Posted May 9, 2013 My PCP said yes! She would refer me for the surgery!!! I thought since I was right on the edge (40 BMI) that she would say just to diet and exercise. After all, she is a tall, thin woman who has never ever been overweight in her life. After making me feel pretty low about my pre-diabetes, low thyroid, sleep apnea, heartburn, joint pains and such due to my weight, I asked her how she felt about weight loss surgery. Her eyes flew open and she looked straight at me, paused for a second and said....."well, yes. That would take care of most, if not all of your problems. If you're up for it, I'll refer you." She said that the lap band procedure or the sleeve would work well for me, being that both were reversible if I had problems. I was somewhat surprised that she thought the sleeve was reversible, but she just wasn't that knowledgeable about the procedure itself. I filled her in, and I know that she will go back and research it. But I'm not letting her off the hook....she said Yes! Yay Yay Yay! She also had an in house dietitian who will sponsor me for the 6 month diet requirement. She says the insurance will take the dietitian since she works under the physicians, and the insurance hasn't had a problem with that in the past. I am over the top excited! Hopefully during the Christmas holidays (I get 2 weeks off from my school), I can have it done at that time and not have to worry about hurrying back to work afterwards! Next year this time, I could be a healthy, fit and slender woman who will be ready for the first time in years to hit the beach! 6 avanti, FeeIsMe2, magpie30 and 3 others reacted to this
makemyownluck 785 Posted May 9, 2013 The sleeve is NOT reversible! They remove your stomach, and it ain't growing back! My PCP didn't know much about the sleeve, either. How funny! But, congrats on the referral! I hope it goes well for ya! 1 Rena's got this reacted to this
920amy 409 Posted May 9, 2013 While the sleeve is not reversible, she may have been getting the sleeve and gastric plication mixed up. Plication is similar to the sleeve in that they make the stomach tiny, but what the plication does is it folds the stomach into itself then they stitch it. technically you can get the plication undone. It is a newer procedure, and is gaining in popularity. I am glad you were able to tell your Dr. sleeve is not reversible and that she will research it. I con't imagine having had this surgery thinking it was reversible based on a Dr. recommendation and info to find out it is not reversible after the surgery, yikes! Good for you for being informed, and Yay for getting an approval!!

I thought that might be what she was thinking of. Wasn't there also some type of plication where instead of stitching the stomach after folding it into itself, that some sort of band or sleeve would go over it to prevent it from unfolding? I dunno, but I do think she was thinking along those lines.
