SD2013 13 Posted May 9, 2013 I had an EGD test yesterday and found out that I have a hiatal hernia. Is this something that will need to be repaired BEFORE my sleeve surgery or do they repair it at the same time? I have read that some have the repair at the same time but they did not know there was a hernia before hand.
Oliver's Mom 258 Posted May 9, 2013 Mine was repaired at the time of my surgery.......I didn't know I had it before the surgery. BUT, it would explain the awful heartburn I had for years prior to the surgery!!
SD2013 13 Posted May 9, 2013 I thought the same thing when my husband told me what they found. Wish I could have had it done a long time ago!!!
TES 858 Posted May 9, 2013 It can be repaired at the time of surgery. Hiatal hernias are very common--my surgeon repairs them in 90 percent of patients who get VSG.
nervousnellie 50 Posted May 9, 2013 I just had my surgery today and Dr. repaired one that I didn't know I had either. My surgeon said the same thing as TES'--most sleeve patients have them and many have no idea. It's very common!
SD2013 13 Posted May 9, 2013 I am sort of relieved to know the reason for my acid problems. Now to get it repaired so I don't have any more issues! Ive been worried all day wondering if I will end up having to have repairs done before sleeve surgery.
Butterfly66 63 Posted May 9, 2013 I had mine repaired the day of surgery as well. I also didn't know I had one. Haven't had heartburn since!
