I had an EGD test yesterday and found out that I have a hiatal hernia. Is this something that will need to be repaired BEFORE my sleeve surgery or do they repair it at the same time? I have read that some have the repair at the same time but they did not know there was a hernia before hand.

Mine was repaired at the time of my surgery.......I didn't know I had it before the surgery. BUT, it would explain the awful heartburn I had for years prior to the surgery!!

I thought the same thing when my husband told me what they found. Wish I could have had it done a long time ago!!!

It can be repaired at the time of surgery. Hiatal hernias are very common--my surgeon repairs them in 90 percent of patients who get VSG.

I just had my surgery today and Dr. repaired one that I didn't know I had either. My surgeon said the same thing as TES'--most sleeve patients have them and many have no idea. It's very common!

I am sort of relieved to know the reason for my acid problems. Now to get it repaired so I don't have any more issues! Ive been worried all day wondering if I will end up having to have repairs done before sleeve surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
