Saw this video and I thought it seemed very interesting. Don't think I agree with 100% of it, but it does have a lot of truth in it. I wasn't sure whether to post it in "Nutrition" or in "Fitness/Exercise" since it relates to both, but the real topic is nutrition, so I went with posting it here. Like I've heard told before, "typically the longer a food lasts, the worse it is for you". I'm not sure what that says about our Protein powder that has quite a shelf life on it, but makes a lot of sense. Being able to afford all fresh and organic food is another matter........

Yes, the preservatives used in food are ridiculous! Buying fresh and organic can be a challenge, but thankfully the post-sleeve life means we don't need as much, so we can better afford to get ourselves the very best! :)

All of the food available to me in this deployed environment is SO loaded with salt it's not even funny. I was 189 yesterday, this morning I was 191.

Yep, less portions equals saving $$$. I'm all for that!

You got that right Globetrotter! Almost impossible to avoid excessive sodium.

I hear you on the $$$ for fresh foods! We are a family of 6 and all four of my kiddos LOVE fresh fruits and veggies. Instead of unhealthy Snacks, I make little party trays filled with cubed or sliced chunks of fruits and veggies. I'll use low calorie plain yogurt or/and Peanut Butter as dips (kids really love celery and apples with peanut butter). Sometimes I'll make them a peanut butter and fresh banana sandwich on wheat or rye. For you parents out there, just FYI, my kids are loving this new healthy way of life. When I dice up the fruit on the weekends, I'll even place some in freezer-lock bags and freeze them for fresh fruit smoothies, or I'll freeze the smoothie and make them little serving cups of fruit sorbet (they REALLY love that). I'll spend anywhere from $200-$300 a week--on fresh foods alone--to keep my kitchen stocked. But again, that's for feeding a whole family. Stocking for a lone sleever or a smaller family should only be a fraction of that cost.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
