Lower BMI Bandsters!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

Someone - can't remember who - referred me to this thread. I just found this forum 2 nights ago and think I'm addicted to it! Maybe I can do this instead of eating when I'm bored! Two nights ago I was up until 4:30 a.m. reading and reading and reading thread after thread! Good thing I'm a teacher on summer break with teenagers who do their own thing:)

Hopefully getting banded in late July - early Aug. Really excited and glad to find this thread. I'm not too nervous about the surgery, but I do wonder if I will get bummed if I don't lose weight quickly. Oh well, better to lose 10 pounds than 0, right?

Question - Do all doctors put you on a liquid diet beforehand? For how long propr to surgery? HOW in the world do you stick to it? I mean, we all ate a lot to get where we are/wer, huh? That makes me a bit nervous.

Thanks!

The pre op diet varies widely according to surgeon. From absolutely nothing to 5 weeks of liquids. I am on day 10 (total 2 weeks) of Optifast and it's been rough. It was REALLY bad the first 5 days then got abit easier but I've only cheated with a few bits of fruit and licked my fingers after serving choc cake!!!! I just keep focusing on the surgery and the weight I'm losing now but I'm struggling hour to hour. Good luck, if all these people can do it so can we.

Hello All!!! Well I went to my nutr. & phsy. evals and passed. I see the MD next Wed and have surgery July 24. I can't wait. My BMi was 37.5. I am 205 and 5'2". He has me on Protein Shakes and Soups (from physicians weightloss) and every other day I can have a peice of chicken and a veggie that's for 2 weeks pre op. I hope I can do it. I am determined to. We all need to keep in touch so we can learn off of each other.

Not every doctor requires a preop diet, especially if you have a lower BMI. I didn't have to do one at all. I was 212 on my surgery day, and I am 5'2" too.

I ate everything I could think of right before surgery. It was the 4 weeks on liquids after surgery that was really hard. Most people think it's for weight loss but it's not. It's to heal the band on your stomach. The stomach needs to not be digesting food while it's healing. People think

"oh that went down just fine so it must be okay" but that's not the case. I was told that if it didn't heal right in the beginning, I would be risking problems years from now, and I was too afraid of that.

Does anyone have suggestions on a good protien shake? I want something that actually tastes good if that is going to be most of my nourishment.

I like the Safeway brand Protein fortified shakes (basically a slimfast shake with twice the protein) and they taste like milk shakes.

Hey all.....question for you lower BMI.....I know I might need to be more patient....BUT.....I guess I've plateaued already!?

I have not lost any weight on my third week even though.....and absolutely no lying here.....I've exercised 5 days a week.....I've counted my calories to make sure I'm not getting over 1000 to 1200 max....most times under.......seem to have adequate retriction.....at least with solid foods.....not drinking any caloric drinks.....drinking Protein for breakfast....and all the rest!

Any suggestions? Any encouragement or similar conditions?

I go for my first fill next Thursday! I'm discouraged

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
