Did anyone smoke after surgery?

Recommended Posts

When doing research before I had the surgery' date=' I read that gastric patients who smoke are at a much higher risk of stomach ulcers.[/quote']

Absolutely, and with a modified stomach an ulcer in a gastric surgery patient is much more serious and harder to treat.

My neighbor and I went to the same medical group. He was told to quit smoking or his surgery would be cancelled. He stopped for three months and then started again post-op. He finally quit 1 year when he had some smoking/sleeve related issues. I am not a smoker and I am simply answering the questions.

It really slowed down my six month weight loss. The final total' date=' I think, was that I only lost around 5 lbs in my 6 month pre op, and that was including my liquid diet before surgery.

The good news was that doc and nut were supportive, and actually told me before surgery that they didn't expect me to lose much since I had quit smoking. (if they had told me that earlier it would have saved me a lot of angst!)[/quote']

As hard as it's been I have quit. It's been about a week and a half since I smoked minus one slip up Sunday. I don't know if I will quit for good right now or not but at the moment I'm done. I only say i don't know if I'll quit yet because I have a lot going on in my life on top of the surgery so if I don't do something people may get hurt lol

I haven't had time to read all of the comments, so I am sorry if this is a duplicate from somebody else, but maybe you should ask about the e-cigerette.. that way people don't "scream" about you smoking and you can even take it on a plane!! :)

Also they will do nicotine tests before surgery.

I have to have nicotine test before I can even schedule. I've quit for four days now, and hope to stay quit, however, this is the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm not a heavy smoker maybe a pack a week. Does anyone have advice on how long nicotine stays in blood and how to get it out faster so I can get my sleeve show on the road?

Ok I'm new to the forum... So I hope I'm doing this right. I have to have a nicotine blood test done before I can even schedule. I've quit 4 days now. Does anyone know of anything to get nicotine out of blood quicker? How long does it take? I hope and pray to not smoke post op or much at all for that matter. I'm ready to get this show on the road, was hoping for June or July surgery date. Have to do 2 week pre-op diet too.

If its ablood test it takes maybe a month or so, if its urine test it takes about 3 days. The nicotine leaves pretty fast its the conitine(sp?) that stays in your system longer. As for detox alot of Water and juices help. Good luck I wish you the best.

Blood test takes 1-3 months depending on the frequency you smoked. E-cigs contain nicotine as well.

I smoked for almost 30 years & quit for this surgery. Like a couple of posters mentioned, it wasn't going to happen til I was ready, and I was just finally ready. My insurance company required it, as well as my doc. I quit with a combination of Chantix and a rechargeable & refillable e-cig type nicotine inhaler (a vape). I showed it to my doc & he said it was fine. His issue is not the nicotine itself, but the junk created by the burning tip of a cigarette. I used it for awhile, but haven't used it for weeks now.

I'm so glad I don't smoke, if I had a Doctor that would do a sleeve on a person that smoked I would run as far away from that quack, insurances agree with the Doctors who won't operate cause it cause more health problem down the line. Most of you are young and feel you are bullet proof and you feel fine now ,but when you get middle age and have COPD and taking breathing treatments, let alone how much ulcers you will have on your stomach. Take it for what it's worth on these warnings. Yes I see some of you it's your choice to smoke so do it in your home and not outside in my air.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
