Ive only spoken to my nutritionist about the 8 weeks post op and caffeine is a no no. Will I ever be able to drink caffeinated coffee? I'm not someone who needs it but I dont understand the point of Decaf, coffee is supposed to wake you up right?

caffine is an irratant to the stomach. My NUT group does not even wwant decaf... go figure... BUT there are a Lot of different suggestions here.

It's funny how different doctors vary in their post op instructions. Some say you can never have coffee and others let you have it in the hospital shortly after surgery.

I had some coffee on my 2nd day post op and drink it every morning. No problems at all.

I've been drinking 12 ounces of coffee a day since 3 days post op. I was told not to overdo it but one or two cups was fine. I actually put a scoop of Protein Powder in my morning coffee since I'm not a "breakfast person" so two birds with one stone.. I get my morning jolt.. AND 25 grams of protein!

Every post op diet seem to be different. It's amazing how many schools of thought there are on the post op diet.

Mine was no caffeine for 4 weeks. I started having Decaf about a week out. Started having regular at 4 weeks. Because caffeine can be a diuretic when you are still trying to get your liquids in and as Arts137 says it can irritate your new tummy.

I can't drink my standard two cups per day but I sure love my one cup of regular, I mostly drink 1/2 to 2/3 of mine and sometimes I will put the leftover in the blender with some chocolate Protein powder, cup of skim and some ice and Starbucks has nothing on me! My own little Protein spiked mocha!

I would say speak with your surgeon or NUT, ask why, it may be they do it as a general blanket so those who really need strict guidence will have the greatest chance of success.

I was allowed coffee at 1 week post-op, and have been having 1 to 2 cups a day for nearly 7 months. I agree with Newat52, why not ask your NUT--

They let me have regular coffee in the hospital! I start every morning with a "Protein Cappucino" - a cup of coffee mixed with a Protein cappucino powder - delicious, and it gets me started! I also enjoy nonfat lattes from Starbucks as a source of protein. My surgeon is OK with it. I realized I didn't drink any coffee for the first few days home from the hospital and I was getting terrible headaches. Once I added some back in, I was fine. Like in all things, moderation...

I drink it with no problem at all but I believe in following your doctors orders for at least 6 months. The real problem comes in when you start adding things to your coffee that have calories. I have to watch that carefully. I can easily have 200 of my 800 calories per day come from coffee additives if I'm not careful.

Definitely check with your doctor or nutritionist. My surgeon said I could have one cup of caffeinated a day (and just have Decaf after that). In my fourth week, post-op I had decaf coffee & my stomach could not handle it at all. The acid messed me up really bad. So, I'm waiting awhile before trying to add it back in even though I do miss it. Everyone is definitely different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
