3 weeks post op lots of indigestion!

Recommended Posts

My surgery date was 4/16/13. Overall I feel very good. I last weighed myself two weeks ago and had lost 7 lbs already. My only concern is the acid reflux. Will this go away? It is better with Prilosec or Pepcid but I was just curious.

I haven't had surgery, but I am thinking about it. I can tell you I take nexium everyday and never have heartburn any more. It is really good stuff.

liquid prilosec worked best for me. I would ask your Dr for a prescription for it. Best Wishes

My surgeon said that what I was feeling was more to do with the healing than with GERDS. My date was Apr 17th. I take Nexium. No problem swallowing the capsules. I asked if I'm going to have to sleep propped up on pillows from now on. Nope. He said that discomfort will go away, too. And, I had TERRIBLE reflux before surgery. So bad, that I didn't even feel it burning in my chest because it had burned off all the nerve endings. All the more reason why his explanation makes sense. What I'm feeling now is just the healing. And, just FYI, some foods irritate it. I love Tomato Soup, but it is acidic. Others here warned me away from it, and I noticed relief when I avoid it now.

You may need to double your dose of omneprazole from 20 to 40 to get relief. Talk to your doctor. Good luck.

I am on omprezole and take 40 mg. my reflux just stared kicking up the past 4 days. So I am concerned, but my Dr is not. He said as my swelling decreases with my new tummy the pressure will go down and my reflux should diminish. Although there are some people who continue to experience it. I hope I am not one of those people. It's uncomfortable and makes me feel hungry.

I am three weeks away from being one year out and I am still on 40mg of omeprazole daily. I was on 20mg prior to surgery. I still, at times, need to take an over the counter antacid in addition to this. I just get really bad acid reflux.

But it is worth it, trust me! Even if I have to live with being on medication forever, it is better than being obese.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
