Chris Christie had lapband in February

It doesn't mention that he considered anything else but the bypass. I know that the lapband is still popular, but only observing anecdotal reports it seems to have a high rate of failure and complications. Why do people still pick it over the sleeve?

In my case, I self-paid in Mexico. The surgeon only offered the bypass or band. Wierd to me now that I know! So glad my insurance denied my surgery so I was able to pick the surgery I wanted vs. what was available to me.

Also, I think it is great that he is sharing that he had surgery and what type.

I did hear about that on the radio. I do commend him for going public with it. It sure is not easy for people especially the American public to be estimating or criticizing your weight loss or lack of.

So glad he did it! I'm from NJ and really love Chris Christie. I'm assuming he chose lap band because it's less invasive and quicker recovery. He needs to be in top shape to manage this crazy state! I believe he'll be running for president next election so I'm so glad he did this now. Unfortunately besides being judged for his weight there would be cause for concern of health risks for someone running this country. (kind of like why President Obama hid he smoked)

Good for him! Men seem to do much better with their lapbands than women do. I despise mine, but then, mine began failing two years ago.

I love Chris Christie and have cringed everytime someone makes a fat joke. At least he is attempting to do something

I'm not sure why anyone would choose it. I initially thought it is what I would do, but after a little research, I knew I would not and went with the sleeve. My physician and some of the other doctor's here in Dallas are not doing it, or doing it much less because of the problems and high failure rate. He can always go for a revision if he wants to. Maybe we should all send him a note. Congratulate him and then mention what we've done in case he has problems.

The headline I saw on CBS, MSN and ABC news this morning said "Christie has secret weight loss surgery..." Hilarious. Apparently every public official is supposed to disclose - ahead of time - any type of medical procedure they are having. HIPPA apparently means nothing to the media :-)

He probably had the surgery because he was called out by Dr. Connie Mariano. Good for him' date=' but not a fan![/quote']

Ha! Ha! but she probably recommended the sleeve, but just to stick it to her, he decided to do the band :P

I have been seeing a lot of his commercials touting how much he has done for NJ. I don't believe that he did it for any reason other than a presidential run. There would be too many questions about his weight.

I was surprised--even the NYT article said that there are "two types" of bariatric surgery--gastric bypass or the lapband. Wonder if he would have considered VSG if he had known about it. Usually NYT does a good job with their health reporting, so I think it was a huge gap that they didn't mention VSG. It's not like gastric plication, which is still undergoing clinical trials. It's an accepted, approved, insurance-covered surgical option.

Update someone one the news just said he's already lost 40 pounds!

And if he can take off a hundred total he should be at a good "fighting weight"...

Really, who knew? I was just looking at him in the news yesterday thinking how WLS would benefit him. I am happy to hear he has taken a positive step in getting his weight under control. He will be a good example for the citizens who look up to him in NJ and other places. Politics aside, I like his approach to whatever position he takes, very strong and assertive.

It is interesting to read the last quote in the article "...even if I don't give a crap about myself." Is that not how we all felt (or at least some of us) before getting WLS? I certainly felt this way. We gave up on our self image as a result of our struggle with our health. As the weight comes off, we start to have a much improved self image.

Kind of disappointed that HIPPA did not protect his medical procedure from the public or even from the media in this case. Very tasteless of the media to violate HIPPA. How would you feel if the same thing happened to you? For one, there are grounds for a lawsuit. And two, someone is going to get fined or be brought to justice in some other way. Violating HIPPA is a big deal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
