What is the normal amount of time for weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I had sleeve surgery on Aug 7, 2012. I weighed in on surgery day at 296. I am down to 238. I thought the weight would have been down a lot more than that by now. Is this the norm?

there really isnt a norm, every person is diff 1 person may lose really slow while another could be fast, you just need to be happy w/the lose you have done so far and just keep doing what your doing, its not a race and I know it can be hard and frustrating at times, but as long as you keep losing and not gaining your doing great,

Are you exercising? Are you still following a diet? Yes, everyone is different, but if you are stalled, there are things you may be able to do to get the scale to start moving again...

A lot of people lose their weight between 6-9 months. Some are done sooner and some will keep losing up to 18 months or longer. It all depends on the type of diet and exercise plan you adopt. My weight loss finished at month 7. I had a pretty good loss rate andi attribute it to eating low carb and participating in a mild exercise plan. My exercise plan became much more involved after I reached goal. I think a lot of post op find themselves getting more and more active as the weight comes off.

Fiddleman - what are you doing in the Ladies Gone Wild forum?? (caught ya! -lol)

I think we all understand the desire to feel like you're losing at a "normal" rate - I know I got caught up in it myself, (and if you're super competitive, you want to feel like you're losing faster than everyone else!) Just remember, there are SO many factors that go into your rate of loss - age, sex, pre-op loss, starting weight and height, any additional medical factors ... astrological sign, first letter of your last name, position of the moon in relation to Jupiter (ok, I'm just kidding, but you get the point). If you really must compare, try to find people who are similar to you - other women of the same age and starting BMI. But try not to let it make you crazy. You reach a point where your body's going to do what it wants, and all you can do is your best as far as following your plan, getting some exercise, and making good choices.

still follow the diet, well minus some cheating here or there. I am trying to exercise, mostly by walking. I am doing the walk away the pounds dvd. You know the one. With that skinny lady and her skinny friends. Makes me want to sit down with a ten pack of Reese Peanut Butter cups and just watch! (like I could even eat three of those candies!) I think I just need to snap out of my winter weather funk and embrace that nice weather! Btw~ Thats ok for a guy to sneak into the girls threads. At least we know that it is something that never changes no matter what size you are :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
