I feel your pain about Aussie, I am very worried about her. I am dealing with some of her issues as well. She needs to let someone in to help her and get these problems took care of. Im afraid she might be self medicating with alchol instead of seeing her doctor. I hope she reads all these post and realize that we care for her and only want for her to get better. Please Aussie if your reading these reach out and let one or all of us help you. Even if its just listening to what you are going through.

Aussie lady I'm so sorry my comments were a general observation not intended to hurt you or anyone else. Please forgive me if I offended you earlier, I was responding to OTR and put my phone down to care for my son when I finished and sent reply you had disclosed how badly you are feeling in the lag time. Admittedly, sometimes I come off harshly but I assure you I'm not that big of a jackass, I hope you are feeling better!:)

O.T.R.' date=' I am trying to work out whether that advice was given as a VST Moderator or as a Sarcasm Specialist. Either way, it's sad to me because I have given up.

I tried damn hard but it was all just TOO HARD. Yes I am slim and at my goal weight. Can I eat, not really. Sunday is Mothers Day and my children are planning a BBQ family get-together. They will go to a lot of trouble and I will try to pretend that I am enjoying the day. I will eat (1/2 cup at most) try not to look like I am in agony then when no-one is looking find a private place where I can do lots of deep breathing and maybe even throw up. I will try not to faint because of my low blood pressure and make sure that I drink lots of Water to combat this, which will mean I will eat even less. This is my life at social occasions now or when my loving partner cooks or takes me to dinner.

Then I will go home and drown my sorrows with lots of alcohol and diet cola and maybe even a chocolate bar.

So, go ahead, I have given you lots of reasons to burn me at the stake. Tell me I eat too fast, or too much or or or...........I have tried it all. And now I will go and curl up somewhere that people don't want to burn me because I am a quitter. You are right, this isn't a comfortable place, I need to find a support group who gives those who are struggling most support.

As a VST Moderator maybe you should open your mind and heart to that concept.

And by the way, I don't see myself as a quitter, I played the game the best I could, but had to admit defeat.[/quote']

Too many bariatric patients don't reach out for help when they NEED help. Meet with your doctor, meet with your surgeon, meet with a therapist. Keep making appointments till you find a medical professional who can help figure out what is going on. You don't feel right? Something is wrong and you are in charge of finding that help.

I know it sucks, but too many people convince themselves they will forever feel "this way"... It's just not true. There is help, advice and support out there.

My heart breaks when people say they turn to alcohol. I was once there and worry ill go back. I had to find a doctor who understood me and came up with a plan of action to get me going again. I still drink sometimes but it's no longer my "meal" or "pain killer"

You deserve to feel your best everyday.

I was looking up this subject a couple of weeks ago and yup there are people who have gained back 60+ pounds of weight. There are also people who lost hardly anything. If you do a quick google search of "vsg to DS or RNY", you will find several stories. It was definitely an eye opener. After having surgery I realized that instead of eating away my problems, I need to express them. I needed to open up about my feelings and it's hard but becoming easier with time. Definitely don't give up

Wow, I was doing a search on the maintenance phase, and what to expect, and came across this thread. I've lost weight rather quickly. I started with only about 85-90 lbs to lose, and have lost 62 in 3 months. I'm barely eating any food. I struggle most days to get to 800 calories, unless I have a snack of some cashews or something. I was concerned with how I was going to stop the weight loss and avoid from becoming TOO skinny. I wasn't expecting to come across this issue. I don't see how I would ever be able to gain it back. I don't enjoy eating anymore. It is easier for me to eat the right things now, since eating is no longer enjoyable it is easier for me to concentrate on eating the 'right' things. Maybe this will all change in the future, and I will better be able to understand this post. I think my wife may have issues down the road. She was sleeved 6 weeks after me, about a month and a half ago. She is down about 30 lbs now. But she is constantly talking about what she'd like to eat or wishes she could eat. She will have a small bit of ice cream occasionally. I don't even like the taste of ice cream, or really any sweets, anymore. I think she has a lot more issues of head hunger than I do. So she may have a harder time in the long term than I do.

I know a man who had gastric bypass about 8 years ago and lost 70 pounds. He weighed I would guess close to 500 pounds. Anyway he lost 70 then put that right back on and is still as big as ever.

Without a doubt, this can happen. I'm 7 weeks out and I can already see how it could happen. To eat dense Protein like chicken is somewhat of a "chore" because I have to chew, chew, chew and then I get full much faster. But I can eat a bowl of popcorn or chips no problem. Same with drinking your calories! So watch out.

I haven't had issues yet. I do allow myself a treat but never too much. This surgery was to help me control my portion sizes, which were always my biggest struggle. I still lose 2-3 pounds a week and have gone from 240 to 213 today and down about 3 sizes! I'm super excited, but I know I'll forever have to keep myself in check.

On the plus side, the whole experience has given me a lot more appreciation for good food. Fast food and greasy foods make me sick to think about. I've become a bit of a food snob. When you have to chew more and taste more, that greasy chicken wing doesn't taste so great anymore!

I met two people in my support group who have regained their respective weigh losses. One lost 110lbs and has regained it back via her swapping addictions. She has developed a drinking problem, and can finish off 1-2 bottles of wine and a few cocktails nightly. She initially drop out of contact for a year out of shame but took the steps to come back and get help for her drinking.

The other started hanging around her old food buddies and family members who told her that she was too skinny and did not look healthy. She started going out and eating fried foods, ice cream, cake, milkshakes and other slider foods. She is diabetic and initially got off of insulin and lost 160lbs. Due to falling into her old habits she regained 130lbs and is back on insulin and her cpap. Like the other person, she too was afraid to show up at support group meetings, and her nutritionist appts and stopped for 18 months.

Both are getting back on track and losing some weight. Although one is considering a revision to a bypass.

Good luck to you and I hope this answers your question.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
