Ideas for what to tell people?

Recommended Posts

Wow. People sure do look for offence where there is none.

If you do not want to tell people then don't tell people I see no one, let me repeat that, no one, in this thread saying you should tell the world you have WLS. If you want to keep it private then keep it private. Your choice.

What I do see and what I do agree with is people asking others not to lie. I see people asking others to either say nothing or be honest. What strikes me as so very, very sad is that this needs to even be said.

I am astounded actually at how many people in this thread have recommended lying. What a sad and sorry state of affairs for society when others deem it acceptable to lie without thought for consequence.

Dishonesty is repulsive and unattractive and all those who advocate outright dishonesty signal to me to be people I would not care to know.

There is nothing wrong with discretion. There is nothing wrong with the truth. Active dishonesty though, conscious lying about your surgery (or anything really) is justlain wrong. And no amount of coming back and trying to justify your lying and dishonesty is going to change that.

Say nothing or tell the truth. Simple. Don't lie. You do yourself and others no favours by bullshitting (or attempting to bullshit) others.

My boss had this surgery about a year and a half ago. I had never heard of it until then. She was very frank about her surgery, her success and struggles. I decided to look into having the procedure after talking to her. My coworkers knew that I was having the surgery, along with my friends and family. Everyone has been so supportive. I chose to be honest when asked because if my boss hasn't shared her experience with me, I would probably still weigh 275lbs.

I Didnt tell people barely my family once I made up my mind I didn't want to hear any negative comments thoughts etc...which I was glad I didn't but then I had major complications and needed lots of prayers so word got around but still the details as to what type etc..but it so strange that people have all become diet police like can you eat that or make comments about what I eat etc..they know nothing about this surgery. So if you tell be prepared for the si called friends who will tell you what when how much you should eat

I have the same kind of coworkers. I haven't had the surgery yet but they have already started asking me why I'm going to doctors all the time. So my plan is telling them I had a hertial hernia removed that surgery diet is very similar to the sleeve and you could just say I saw results with it and u kept it since it seemed to work. That personally my opinion and what I will be saying :D

Fascinating how hostile and threatening these responses are. The irony is that discretion is needed due to criticism and negative judgments by others. And yet, THOSE who should be MOST supportive of each other - those who are going down this same life-changing path - are turning on each other with passionate criticism!

I support each person here who NEEDS to be an open book with John Q Public. I support each person here who NEEDS to withhold information from outsiders. And, I support each person here who NEEDS to spin their own truth to minimize the questions and gossip in their own inner circle. So what, if a story is spun? In this situation, how is it harming the recipient?

I support whatever my brothers and sisters here NEED to make this transition as calm, peaceful and stress-free as possible. Why? Because THIS is my Sleeve Family and I believe that a family should lift each other up, not tear them down. TO EACH HIS OWN. I may not handle my "story" the way you would, but I respect your need to handle it in your own way.

All right. So I'm due back at work next week and I'm definitely ready to get out of the house!

My question is' date=' what did you guys tell people when you didn't want to reveal the real surgery?

I'm at a loss. Some coworkers can be inquisitive. I won't say "nosey" because they're all very nice, but I'm sure they'll ask where I've been for 3 weeks and notice the ~15 lbs lost!

My thoughts were to say something about stomach ulcers. Or maybe something about my PCOS. I DO have PCOS and that's a major cause of my weight gain, so it's not a huge lie.

And then part of me wants to just tell the truth... Worded in a way like "my PCOS was bad and my insulin was skyrocketing (all true!) so I had this surgery to help me lose weight and fix the issues."

I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing but was just interested in what you guys told others. I'm a "lightweight" so I feel like this may confuse some of them or even insult some of the ladies who are larger than me.

Any tips?[/quote']

I have same conditions like yours PCOS n i used it (well its true) to convince my husband about the sleeve...thn to people i said i had one large cyct which i removed n that helped me to lose the weight...it works fine!!

OFFENSIVE! Oh and as you say "repulsive and unattractive"

I was honest when people asked me but I said it like this: I am doing a LOT more Protein than I was before (replacing a meal or two with a high protein shake) and doing low calorie, low carb, and daily exercise. Nothing of this is a lie, and this type of "diet" would definitely show results. You can feel confident and proud saying this because it's the truth and it gives the person asking all the info they need. win win! =]

My two cents...you didn't do anything wrong, you did something that needed to get done for your health. There's no need to lie and no need to say any more than you are comfortable talking about. Saying something as simple as "I took care of something that needed to get done" gives an answer that is a) honest and B) maintains your privacy. It also has an underlying tone of "I'm not discussing this" OR you could tell them you has WLS. You'll be surprised by how many people will support you, and we need ALL the support we can get. If someone has something negative to say, just politely dismiss them and their comment. Good luck!

My advice you can take it or leave it. Tell them you took a 3 week vacation to find yourself and exactly what this life meant and means to you. Thay youhad a calling from a higher place that told you that you needed to get your sh*t together and you decided to listen.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
