lovedlov 1 Posted May 5, 2013 Is it normal to be bothered by some smells and be very sensitive to smell after surgery or am I the only one?
jhkrn 8 Posted May 5, 2013 You're not alone. There was a carry in where I work Friday. Lots of crock pots going. The smells were overwhelming. I don't know if it bothered me because I couldn't partake....but I couldn't eat lunch in the same room. It was almost nauseating.

melody2 61 Posted May 5, 2013 I thought it was just me. My sense of smell has increased significantly. Some smells really bother me now.....like bacon cooking or steamed shrimp.
Mousesmom 90 Posted May 5, 2013 My daughter had a doughnut yesterday in the car. It was so overwhelmingly sweet smelling I had to roll down the window. I am almost 8 weeks out and was so surprised. It hadnt happened before.
MichiganChic 3,262 Posted May 5, 2013 Right after surgery, my sense of smell was just like it was when I was pregnant, and I'm too old for that, lol. Now, 4.5 months later, it's still more sensitive than before surgery. In fact, I thought the ground turkey I was cooking was bad, so I pitched it and went and got more...and the new stuff smells the same, but I know it's not bad. Pixie Dust 526 Posted May 5, 2013 No kidding?? I wonder why our sense of smell changes? Just like MichiganChic, I too had a very sensitive sense of smell when I was pregnant but no other time. I guess something to look forward to...or not ??!!! Then again, I have heard that things taste different too. Things you used to love to eat are no longer appealing? Strange?? Annie04 28 Posted May 5, 2013 I find this topic really interesting because I do not have much of a sense of smell. I had a nasal pollypectomy when I was a teenager and after I could smell perfume faintly if I hug someone, but I am unable to smell baked goods while in the oven or even if someone has gas (ok you know what I mean and my husband loves it that I can't smell his gas..lol) I am pre surgery and I will let you know if it increases. I personally would love to smell a candle burning or my moms homemade bread baking in the oven or even get a little grossed out from the human smells. JennyBeth 127 Posted May 5, 2013 It's normal for the first few months. So are food aversions. It should get better after a few months according to my surgeon.
