Just started considering banding

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have just recently found out about the banding procedure and started doing research. I am 28 years old and have struggled with my weight all my life. My major concern is my insurance company covering the procedure. I have struggled with my weight all my life and luckily I have the same primary care doctor for the last 10 years or so. The only thing that I am worried about is that I do have Hypothyroidism. It uncontrolled and a large part of that is because of my weight. Do you think my thyroid disorder will cause a problem with my insurance company covering the band procedure? Thanks for the help

I don't believe it will interfere with the approval, and in fact surgery may be considered beneficial to the condition. I would suggest starting with a call to your insurance provider, and getting the low down on what your policy covers, and what the requirements are. Take careful notes, who you spoke with, time etc. Anything they refer to, in your policy, you can ask for copies to be sent to you. Start a file, and start getting your answers!!! The fact that all your medical records are in one place will simplify things! As well as the fact that you are probably quite familiar with the staff at the Dr.'s office, after having been a patient for so long! That always helps!!!

Please come back and ask any questions you have, and keep us posted on how things are progressing!

And BTW, welcome to LBT!!!

Hi ya havin

I can so relate as I have Hypothyroidism too...I was diagnosed after years of having it and not knowing...which is why i packed on the weight...334lb at my largest...my insurance company covered me despite the condition...but I am covered by Australian insurance so am not sure about American Insurance Companies.

Best of luck...keep me posted on your progress...if you want to PM or email me feel free. its nice to know I am not the only one with the condition.

It just depends on your individula policy, some insurances cover it, but employers have made it unavailable, and some insurances don't cover it at all....it is different with all it seems.

As for cost, I have seen it range from the $7500.00 range (Mexico) to well over $25, 000.00 (some US Dr.'s). It is not something to shop bargain basement for, but neither is it necessary to pay 3 times as much to someone who may have less experience. It too is very individualized. what you can afford, and where you are comfortable going....there are good and bad Dr.s EVERYWHERE!!! It is something you need to research very well, and make an informed decision. Good luck in yoru research!!!

I was diagnosed with a HYPO thyroid.. (meaning underactive) or as in my case.. I just does not work on its own..... so I've been taking meds for it since the ripe ol age of 22.. I'm 37 now, and it is just part of my life.. it should have no effect on your surgery decision.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
