I keep having this dream that after surgery I find out I have cancer in what is left of my stomach and thy have to remove the rest. I wonder if that is even possible. I will have to look it up.

Am I the only one that has dreams about things like this?

I have not had that one...just the one where all the people who got sleeves find out later that the sleeve gives them cancer. One of the things I didn't like about this surgery was the lack of long term research.

In all of my researching I have never found an instance of bariatric surgery or any other kind causing cancer. I have had prostate cancer and it had nothing to do with surgery. Some people think biopsies release cancer but no definitive answers there.

If cuts cause cancer why wouldn't we get skin cancer from all the gashes we get stitches for? All surgery is is sewn up cuts.

I've had dreams about gigantic cartoon characters trying to run me down and stomp me. Sponge Bob is not as nice as people think he is.

Actually you can live without your stomach.....

There was one guy that wrote a book about how he had stomach cancer and they removed his stomach and he was teaching people healthy cooking and eating skills. :) He saids he eats all the times nothing but nutritious foods... :) No worries, you've got this!

I don't think she meant that the surgery causes cancer. I think she's just concerned if she gets cancer in her stomach, she won't have anything left. I thought of the same thing. What if something happens to my stomach. I have nothing left of it.

Don't worry, I'm sure most of us have thoughts/dreams of something going wrong. Somebody else is thinking the same way!! "What if's" are part of life tho...

I agree that VGS surgery shoudl not increase the risk of cancer of the stomach, but it would be possible (although extremely rare) to get cancer in the remaining part. My great-aunt had stomach cancer decades ago and had to have her entire stomach removed. So, really, you could be in the same boat after stomach cancer treatment with or without the VGS surgery before-hand. She did very well for 40+ years without her stomach and passed away from unrelated issues a few years ago. She was basically the same as a VGS person and never had problems with her weight (even though everyone else in her family is obese).

Please try not to worry - you won't get stomach cancer.

I am not saying that surgery will give me cancer just that if something happens I will have no stomach left! I also worry a lot about long term things. I try not to think about it!

The second poster talked about the sleeve causing cancer. The sleeve has been known to cause hotness, at least my wife thinks so. :)

I know, I was just trying to let you know that even if the unthinkable happened and you did lose your entire stomach, you'd still be ok. :)

You know what they do for people with stomach cancer? A Rous en Y! If I'm not mistaken, that was how it came into existence in the first place. So no worries! A sleeve can easily be converted and you'll already know how to eat and everything! Better yet, think about how terrific your sleeve is going to be and how FABULOUS you are going to look!!

I think this happened on this past weeks Grey's Anatomy only not due to cancer

If something WERE to happen to your stomach, there's an 80% or so chance that the affected part of your stomach would have already been removed. Right?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
