Choice of bariatric procedure, based on 20 years of practice

Recommended Posts

Great article! http://m.obesityhelp.com/articles/choice-of-bariatric-procedure-a-philosophy-obtained-in-20-years-of-bariatric-practice-2/

I accidentally linked to page 2 of 8 at first. Sorry about that.

I am glad that banding works for some people. I did not like the high maintainence factor so I chose the sleeve. Good article.

Can't and won't recommend something with so many issues. From minor to severe.. It's too costly!

The article is actually anti-band.

I realized I linked to just one page of the article at first. It is actually pro-VSG and pro-DS and very anti-band and RNY.

This is an excellent article.....ugh I am really undecided whether to go with sleeve or RNY.

One thing holding me back is I have never been a great healer from other surgeries, even childbirth, I tend to have a much longer recovery time (sometimes twice the norm), and I am thinking there would be less trauma to my body with a sleeve, rather than the RNY.

Thoughts?

The sleeve is a faster and easier recovery.

The weight loss long term is about the same so it really just comes down to person choice.

Despite the typos and absence of copyediting, I think this is a GREAT article (written in 2013)!

I'd love to see something more recent written by this surgeon. I'm going to do some research.

I really appreciated the author's 20-year perspective. Did you find anything more recent from him?

He doesn't appear to be with that website anymore, but he is prolific in the medical journals.

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0,14&q=%22Mitchell+Roslin%22&scisbd=1

You have to have access to medical journals to read most of them, but I was very interested in this one:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1550728915008588

Paired Editorial for “Insurance Mandated Medical Weight Management Prior to Bariatric Surgery”

Quoted from his introduction paragraph:

The article “Insurance Mandated Medical Weight Management Prior to Bariatric Surgery” adds to the growing literature that demonstrates that there is no scientific justification for insurance companies to require a mandatory supervised weight loss program as a prerequisite for bariatric surgery coverage. It is my hope that we collectively use this paper—and several others that have yielded similar results—to end this discriminatory and counterproductive practice. It is time to recognize that the current system does not work for patients, bariatric programs, and even employers and insurance companies.

I did ... but they're all listed in a medical journal library system -- where I'd have to pay bucks to read them.

Yeah, one benefit to being in a healthcare graduate program. :) All I have to do is grab the DOI and search it in my university's library. :D

Yeah, I don't abuse it, but I'll have access through December 2017 unless I flunk out. Kidding. I made my first B in my graduate program this spring, and was P.O.'d about it. :D

Interesting read as a brand new sleever. I wasnt convinced about the band when I first looked at surgery two years ago. As to whether my new tool is a temporary or a permanent solution - only time and my attitude will tell!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
