My insurance company denied me. I don't quite reach the suggested BMI for this procedure. Had I had some co-morbidities such as high BP, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, arthritis, etc, I could have been approved with my lower BMI. I am thankful that all the previous mentioned items are under control and that my real concern in just my weight (at this point in time). However, I've battled my weight for 11 years and I was really counting on this procedure as the tool to help me manage it. I know there is the option of self paying, but out of pocket is super pricey and interest rates for financing are through the roof. I've attended a required seminar and consult with the Doctor. He still thinks I am a good candidate for the procedure even if my insurance won't cover the expenses. Right now I am feeling a little defeated.

how short where you on the bmi? I know it sounds so crazy, but if it's close, then maybe put on a few?

I am 3% short. The nutritionist "suggested" that I put on 16 lbs to meet the min weight requirement for my height for the procedure. I considered it for about 2 seconds then decided that's not the way I want to go. I might try to appeal it.

That's what I did/doing... My BMI was 39.something so I just gained the few pounds needed. Hopefully by my consult next week I gained enough. If my BMI was in the lower 30s I think I would have done exactly the same thing too ;)

Aw man, that's a lot of pounds to gain... But it's always easier to gain then it is to loose =\ unfortunately. Hopefully they'll approve you after you appeal it! :)

I too hovered between 33 and 36 bmi for 3 years. When I decided to def do this I gained the weight to remain at a 35 min. I have the comorbies of apnea etc. I was happy I did it...sleeved 4/23 and couldn't be happier. I've struggled since I was a kid (45 yrs old now). It's not for everyone and a personal decision and one you will make if/when you ate ready

My insurance completely excludes it so I went as a self pay to Mexico.

My experience was better than I could have hoped for.

I know Mx isn't for everyone, but remember its an option.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
