Surgeon consultation?

Recommended Posts

What happens during the consultation with the surgeon you choose? I have mine scheduled for next week, and I would like to know what is going to happen beforehand.

Hi Lauren, hope you are doing well. My surgeon explained everything to me and showed me what the lapband was made of. Generally speaking I would assume your appointment would be similar. They also talk about diet. He may put you on a presurgery diet beforehand. Good luck. I'm anxious to hear your progress.

When I had my consultation, he asked a lot of questions about what types of diets I had tried previously and how I had done on them. He did a general physical and asked a lot of questions about my health history. Based upon that, he decided what additional tests I would need. He explained all about the surgery to me, what would be expected of me before, during and after and then went over my pre-op diet.

I, honestly, was a bit scared that the doctor would be rude and say something like "how did you let this happen?" or "why don't you exercise" but no, they were very professional and wanted to know why I wanted to look into surgery and if I was prepared to fully commit to their program. It was no sweat.

However, if you meet with them and don't feel comfortable then I'd say look for the next doc because my only other word of advice is...you'll be seeing these people ALOT and it's going to be important that you can openly discuss stuff with them and feel comfortable. Good luck-it'll go great!

Hi laurend...

My first consult was basically him explaining the procedure...showing me the lapband how it works...answering my questions... etc etc.

I had my mom with me so that was pretty cool to have a second opionion there to listen to what he was saying and remind me of things when we left the clinic. All and all nothing overwhelming, or scary.

Lauren, this is your time to decide if the surgeon is right for you. Take a list of questions to ask him. Your hiring him, let it be your interview!

There is some great questions on this forum to ask the surgeon, I believe its under the pre-0p sight and I think Penne is the one that started it.

You just want to make sure that you feel comfortable with the surgeon and that you both have the same goals and that he is supportive of the Lap-Band. Many are pro RNY and not Lap-band.

Good-Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
