How many of you have lost hair?

Recommended Posts

my hair is naturally thin and fine, so I worried about losing after the surgery. Sure enough its falling out alot! I can see my scalp because the hair is so thin now. Ugh. I noticed it started about a month ago so Im hoping it will start coming back soon, before I'm completely bald.

I'm going to kick up the Biotin, not sure if that will help or not but its worth a shot. My fingernails are stronger than they used to be.

I was sleeved 2/5/13. Started losing my hair about the 12th week. I probably have lost my hair. I take GNC hair skin and nails chew. My doctor said it has to run its course. And it could last up to three months. I'm down 46 pounds.

I started losing is big time after about 4/5 months. So depressing. I've lost 120 pounds in 7 months so I guess that was to be expected. I just hope it stops soon.

I just had my revision on May 6th. With the band it starting thinning at about 4 or 5 months. It never thickened back up and now with the sleeve im nervous about losing more. I tried everything when it started to fall out with the band but nothing worked, shampoos, Biotin, etc... I am now trying cologen. No one noticed mine except me and my imediate family because it didnt fall out of the top but i am really worried. Double wammy!

My hair started falling out at 2.5 months post op. I am now 3.5 months and its kicked up even more. I lost tons this morning when I washed it. I make sure to not mess with my hair a lot. That might be why i have a lot of loss on hair wash days. I have a lot of hair and its baby fine, it is now starting to be noticeable to people who know me. Hopefully it stops soon.

I keep reading that hair loss may happen after surgery. Are we talking clumps of hair? Thinning? Need for wigs and hats?

Does it grow back?

This may seem like a trivial thing to worry about but I'd like my hair to stay on my head.

Just don't wash your hair to often !

Mine started thinning at 3.5 months and is still falling out, though it seems to have slowed. I went to a dermatologist and they gave me injections and a topical ointment. My hair wasn't very thick to begin with so I couldn't afford to lose much. I've been taking Biotin since before surgery and always get my Protein in.

I am almost a year out and had extremely thick hair. I started losing it about 8 months and it won't stop thinning. I am so upset since it is getting thinner and thinner. I shed all day. I hope this stops soon. I have lost 105 lbs now.

I take my Vitamins and my Protein. I hope it stops soon and grows back!

It's typical from what I understand. An I think they say its from lack of Proteins. Idk if that's true or not but after surgery I purchased ISOMIL((i think thats the name, its a high Protein clear liquid) from a health food store and I drank one bottle through out my day after surgery for about a month. And now that I eat solid foods, I eat about a steak a week, but lots of Beans, spinach, etc.., any high Protein foods, and I haven't lost any hair at all.

Sorry to tell everyone but the hair loss is a side effect of the surgery, your body's response to major surgery. So shampoos, Protein, vits improve the quality of ur hair and help with re growth but nothing stops the Hair loss. If there was a way to avoid it, we would all be given the cure! And there would be a lot less guys with shaved heads :-))))

Am currently losing mine but as I said in another post, once it stops and re grows, I will still be healthy and looking great - it's a small price to pay for such a huge change in my life.

Hi, I'm kinda new here and have been browsing around a bit, and stumbled on this topic because I'm worried about hair loss as well.

So here is some info I learned yesterday from my first surgeon consult, regarding the subject. The in-house pharmacist also discussed this with me.

They said that Hair loss, if it happens, is typically seen averaging about 3 months out. This is due to inadequate Protein and B Vitamin intake pre- and immediate post-surgery. They said it takes the body about 3 months to "catch up" to a deficiency, and hair loss is a side effect of this. Which makes sense to me, because I've experienced a similar situation first hand with my son who just came out of a very long hospital stay. He had many wounds to heal and became extremely Protein deficient because his wounds were just sucking the protein from the rest of his body. His skin was awful and his hair became horrible. He underwent a massive protein supplementation, and we kept getting discouraged by not seeing results right away... but then a few months later out of nowhere his protein levels went up through the roof and he started healing well and everything went back to normal.

You might think you're getting enough protein on intake, but it may not be absorbing well. POUND, POUND, POUND the protein whenever you can, take your B's and Biotin. This will help your hair. I'm starting this now, with surgery expected in October.

Proasis and Protica products are excellent protein supplements and are well absorbed. My son used these brands' products extensively for over a year and has had awesome results in wound healing. I myself take them on occasion but will be ramping up over the next few weeks. The little Sunkist shots are the most protein bang you can get in a small amount - 25 grams in only 2.5 ounces, and they taste like liquid Jolly Ranchers! I'm hoping those will be easily tolerated post-surgery because I'm stocking up now. Proasis and Protica products are recommended for medical and bariatric use. (Google!) A little expensive but so worth it. I swear by the stuff. (I don't work for them nor am I endorsing them, but when I know a product is good from personal experience, I like to let it be known)

I hope this helps! :)

Oh I just started a topic, didn't see this one. Put me on the list for losing hair, A LOT of it!

Mine started at 3 months out. I take all my Vitamins, Biotin, b12's, 80-100 g protien a day, whole schabang ..... still losing it like mad. I was told it's just a side effect of surgery/stress on the body not necessarily a deficient. I just want to know how long it will take to resume back to normal

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
