Carbonation - is there any?

Scientific evidence that carbonation stretches the stomach. Some say there dr says do not drink others say dr says just in moderation. Some say no restriction. What is the truth? Where does it say it hurts you. I could see before you heal but after 6 months or so will it be alright.

After 6 months, i don't think a little every now and then would hurt you. I just wouldn't make it a habit, as a lot of carbonated beverages also contain a ton of sugar. my new motto is that old saying " to all things, moderation"

As I understand it the carbonation stretches the stomach, imagine all those gassy little bubbles. I have not tried any, am only 2 months out. There are definitely times I would love to have a soda but am a little concerned regarding it.

I doubt that it has been studied specifically. That's probably why there are so many schools of thought. There is a post on thinnertimesfourm.com (can't post a link) that seems to be a good as explanation as any from a bariatric surgeon. I personally never have bought into the whole "it will stretch your sleeve" idea. It doesn't seem physically possible as the gas is going to dissipate in both directions and doesn't spend a tremendous amount of time in the stomach. I do buy in to the fact that soda (regular or diet) is totally an unhealthy food item and I can see how it could make you feel uncomfortable. It does that with a regular stomach if you drink enough. There have been scientific studies that drinking diet soda still leads to obesity even though there's no sugar involved. For me, I just decided that there wasn't enough room in my life for soda, so I gave it up. I was a heavy diet soda drinker, but really had no problems kicking it. I'd rather be healthy.

Ya know Mokee, you're probably right....after a certain point it may not hurt- BUT (and we all have a big but, right?) if there is even a remote chance out in the outer reaches of space that it could, would, possibly, maybe, perhaps stretch my sleeve in the teeniest way...... It's OUTTA here!! Don't need it, don't want it. I don't even miss it, and i was a die hard Diet Coke-aholic of the worst kind.

Just my two cents.

That and four bucks will get you a crappy cup o starbucks! ;)

In Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies it actually says that carbonation stretching the stomach has never been proven. However, it does say that it will give you gas.

I tried drinking a Sprite Zero the other day and I had trouble swallowing it. I'm no long use to drinking carbonated drinks. I believe that carbonated drinks are not taboo. But when I try something new, like Sprite, I always go very very slow, take small sips, and wait a few minutes between sips to see how my stomach reacts. Everyone's stomach is different - as well as having doctors that have different ideas about their patient's diets.

I never did finish that Sprite! B)

I don't think it stretches your sleeve. That's just my opinion, I've read about several veterans on here who drink diet sodas still and they still have good restriction at 1-2 years out. I have tried a diet Pepsi since surgery and it was fine. I burped like crazy all thru it. I don't plan on making it a regular thing tho. For me soda could be a slippery slope as I was addicted before surgery to regular Pepsi.

Carbonation is a no-no for lapbanders (sposed to erode ur band, altho it never actually touches the band so I don't really understand that). I've been banded for 3 1/2 yrs and have had occasional sips of hubbys soda when out to eat. Never actually finished a whole soda - ever. I'm hoping that when sleeved, I'll still be able to sip.

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

      The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
