My surgery was last Tuesday and I was discharged from the hospital the following Wednesday evening. I was pretty much bedridden for the first couple of days at home, mosrly due to meds and there being no other place to sit in my tiny studio, other than bar stools.

I weighed in at 231 before my pre op diet, 222 the day of surgery, 225 the day I came home and today I am at 212. I've been working really hard to get in all of the recommended fluids and Protein, sometimes staying up until way past midnight just to make sure ive got enough Water in to safely fall asleep. Im not very hungry these days, and I probably only consume about 300-500 calories per day in Protein, soy milk, and yogurt.

Most of my incisions seem to be healing quite nicely, including the drain. I still have a lot of pain in/ under my quarter sized incision that doesn't seem to want to go away. I cant find a comfortable way to sleep and when I move around the pain is killer-- its also bad when I try to pick stuff up. Coughing is extremely painfull, and today I sneezed and I could have sworn I saw "the light".Is this normal for 1 week post-op?

I'm a week out also, and I really don't have any pain. I've been a lot more tired the past two days, and the locations on my stomach where they gave me heparin shots give me a twinge every once in awhile, but have not needed any pain.

Maybe you should call your doc just to be sure.

I had pain for the first few weeks. I stopped the pain meds after that point. I actually felt occasional pain by the large incision up until about 3 months out. I too had a hard time finding a comfortable position to sleep.... Slept in the recliner a few times. I normally sleep on my side and could not do that for the first month.

All that being said.... It never hurts to call your surgeons office and discuss it with them. Best wishes for your continued recovery!

I was sleeved on the 22nd also. My only pain now is still in my shoulder from the excess gas and it really hurts by the end of the day. I talked to my Doc about pain meds and she indicated that only 1 in 10 surgery's still need pain meds after the first week.

Thank you all. My follow up with the surgeon is this Friday so I will definitely ask about the persistent pain. I stopped taking the pain meds completely the day before yesterday. Do you think if I continue it will help me heal? I really hated the taste and being laid up all day because of the meds made it hard to get the fluids in.

I didn't start to feel better until after I stopped the meds. I felt like because I was numb from them I was aggravating things because I couldn't feel them. I know that pain you're talking about. My doctor said it's from the stitch in the large incision (lower right side). Walking helps EVERYTHING! I say this in post after post, but really the more I walk the better I feel. I'm still not walking at the speed I used to but I'm getting there. My surgery was April 17 so today is my 2 week anniversary and I really feel great :)

I was doing great with my pain but then a week out I was turning over in bed, felt an awful pain in my biggest incision and I thought I too saw the light! Lol! I guess I popped one of my internal stitches. It hurt for a day or two then I was fine. If your pain is constant still tho just be sure to mention it to the dr in your follow up appt! Good luck! :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
