Swelling above incision - Post op help!

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved Monday and all went well. I am not really sore anywhere anymore except over one of the incisions. It isn't hot or red, but it's swollen and hurts to touch. I was seen by the nurse yesterday who confirmed its not internal bleeding but that it looked to be swelling and she said this can be normal since its by the incision they take the stomach out through which can be the most irritated. Did anyone else experience it? It hurts when it's pushed on or when I'm using my stomach muscles to sit up or stand. Just looking for some piece of mind.

I had a huge problem with the incision right below my drainage. I had them look at it a couple of times. It was red with lots of puss coming out of each staple. They stapled it in my fat roll so every time I moved, it rubbed. The best feeling was getting the staples out. It took me weeks before it started feeling better and a couple of months for it to stop bleeding/puss. Hang in there, it gets better.

If you think about it, the incision may be small but they had to cut through a lot of stuff to get to that stomach cavity. Skin, fat and muscle. Its a lot of trauma to your body. That muscle cutting is why it hurts when you sit up and things like that. It wil pass. This is very normal and if I'm reading this right you were just sleeved what 3 days ago. Yea ,you will hurt still. Take your pain meds and keep an eye on it. You will be fine. And congrats on getting it done. Good luck!

Thanks so much all! I have a complicated medical history with lupus and blood clotting so I know I'm a little more paranoid than the average person about how my body reacts. It helps to hear others experienced similar symptoms!

I have exactly the same thing! I'm 12 days out and the one by my belly button hurts when I move certain ways other than that I almost forget I had surgery sometimes! I'm chalking it up to healing but it's good to hear that other people have experienced the same. Good luck!

For the first 4 days the one between my breasts (sorta, the tiny one blow between? Lol) swelled kind of big. I was told not to put anything on them but I swabbed it with Betadine because my breasts are large and I was afraid the area was too moist. Problem solved ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
