Ok, I have a special situation. I'm 9 days preop and Sunday night my son was admitted for an emergency appendectomy. I've been at the hospital now 3 days with nothing but apple and grape juice. If I see any more juice I'm going to throw it through the window (not really).

Yesterday I was allowed to start milk a little at a time. Today it went fine also. Tomorrow I'm allowed Protein shakes. I am physically hungry and was wondering if I'm allowed to have a pediatric size ice cream. I know it's not an ok food, but it's milk and sugar. Should I just tough it out til I can get home and get my Protein tomorrow? Can I eat this without injury to my pouch? I just need another 150 cals and need a bridge. I'll never eat ice cream again (blech, but it sounds better than more apple juice).

Sorry about your son. And I'm sorry that I can't help you with the ice cream thing. I'm only on day 13 and its been ruff for me. But I say try it! Most that would happen is you throw it up. And you will know if its bad after the first lick.

Oh your pre op. then yes go get you some ice cream. I cheated a little on my 10 day diet and the dr told me on day of surgery that my liver looked great. I was stunned.

I'm not pre op, I need to chance my profile because I'm always mobile. Today I'm 10 days post op. At the last minute I remembered the Protein shakes in my car and avoided eating that crap ! Yay!

My son is being discharged today, we had laparoscopic surgery one week apart. He's a big strong 13 year old and I was really counting on his lifting abilities lol but I'm just overjoyed he is ok :D

I can not do Protein shakes any more. I started on real food against drs orders. But I was only getting about 4 gms of Protein a day. So he can suck it. Everyday I still feel sick! Annoying! It's like the stomach flu that has lasted 2 weeks.

My son is 16 so I'm not getting any support from him. Maybe if I was on Xbox live he might. I have lost over 33 lbs and he said he can't tell. Ugh!

Skip the I e cream. The hospital should have cottage cheese. Eat that instead. No added sugar and a lot less fat. Hope your son and you are better soon!

Sorry about your son but agree with melodymouse there are healthy options at the hospital. My mother has been hospitalized twice in the last few weeks and I got greek yogurt and added a little granola or 8 almonds for a little fat and extra Protein.

Another option is to bring some Protein powder and but some milk or pack Soup with a little unflavored Protein protein power added in a microwaveable container.

I was saved at the last minute by remembering the Protein shakes I took to TJ at the last minute. It was late and the cafeteria was closed and the ped fridge is packed with ice cream.

Not to worry, I just drank my Protein shake at 9 1/2 days instead if 10. I will say a prayer for all the sleevers who can't stand Protein Shakes. It was my first feeling of fullness. I love, love the Dr Mercola grass fed, artificial sweetener free chocolate Protein Shakes. Tastes like chocolate milk even when made with Water. 160 cals per 20 mg Protein 2 scoops. Yum!

Well during my pre-op I cheated quite a few times but was real strict 3 days before and my Dr said everyi was good. Not that I think you should cheat but I think you will be just fine

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
