I think a lot if us, most of us, Mexi-Sleevers develop a kind of mild case of hero worship for our surgeons.

It kind of makes sense. We are obese to morbidly obese. We are struggling to get affordable life saving surgery. And viola! There it is. Between 4k-10k. Life saving/changing surgery.

We devote, typically although not exclusively, months of research and saving to get the surgery.

We travel, sometimes thousands of mile, away from our comfort zones (home), to a country where our 1st language (more often than not) is not our medical teams 1st language.

We do this alone or with a trusted Plus 1.

More often than not our experiences exceed our expectations. A new day. A new life. A new beginning.

We feel a sense of loyalty and hero worship who helped put that chance for a new life within our grasp.

Or... I'm totally way off the mark and merely waxing poetic.

I spent many months researching my dr but i don't think I hero worship my surgeon. I am thankful for what he did and am glad with my choice but I'm not a fanatic for him :) however I DO hero worship the sleeve, I will defend this form of wls to the death. Lol. When I hear people talk about other forms of wls I'm always like "oh no, the sleeve is the best way to go" ;) so in that way I am biased, just not with my surgeon because of this forum I see mannnnnyyyy people having success with many different surgeons.

I don't think I hero worship either. Don't get me wrong, I have a GREAT respect for Dr Kelly and his staff. I was treated excellent with great care, both professional and personal.

That being said, I'm more passionate because I'm a midwife. Delivering babies is a lot of responsibility and there is always a chance of something going wrong fast that isn't caused by something you did. I've had hemorrhages, shoulder dystocias and other life threatening complications. Thankfully I'm still new and had a more experienced midwife with me but I handled it well and all was well.

A local midwife that has delivered over 5,000 babies and is extremely well respected and has been teaching other midwives for years lost a baby a few months back. This obviously tore her apart. Other midwives and their support staff are much more supportive than Mexican bariatric surgery staff and coordinators lemme tell you.

I so far have a 0% long term complication rate and a 0% death rate. It's because I've only been doing this for 2 1/2 years. The likelihood of me having a severe complication or death regardless of doing everything right when I get to 5-7k babies is really high. I truly feel for all these surgeons, especially the one(s) drug through the mud for operating on THE most at risk population (obese, morbidly obese). That's where my strong feelings in my posts come from.

He isn't my hero. I'm a Christian person and believe God works through the hands of surgeons. I believe I was led to Dr Kelly, but I was there 4 days and met him a few times per day. I appreciate him and all his wife did very much, but it's not enough to be my hero ;) just a talented person I'm very glad came into my life.

Maybe hero worship is not the right expression, but I'm struggling to find the right one. We Mexi-Sleevers seem, for the most part, a bit more passionate about our surgeons and experiences.

I'm Christian as well and I believe that Dr. Aceves was an answer to a prayer. When I chose him I felt so much peace of mind that was lacking before.

I would have gladly went with Dr Aceves. He sounds wonderful. I'm very glad I went with who I did, but don't feel he is the end all of gastric sleeves. Just one of the few top notch!

I get what you're saying. I went with Almanza who has a bad rep and I do feel like he is very passionate about money. I feel I am very lucky to have had no complications but don't know if I'd recommend him. But he gave me a new shot at life. He made my dream a reality by being able to afford this surgery and for that I'm grateful! I put my trust in him and God and felt totally at peace with my decision!

Here's to our rebirth!

I totally understand what you're saying. That's why although I wholeheartedly recommend my surgeon I don't not recommend any other MX surgeon (except one, but that's another story not for here) BUT I do recommend my Cordinator with beyond the highest of standards for MX Cordinators. No hero worshiping, just first hand knowledge of many many Cordinators.

I'm glad your experience was good.

As well as yours! I'm actually excited for everyone who has a great surgeon. Like I said (and likely will say often) I loved Dr Kelly very much, but if everyone went to the same surgeon it would be too hard to schedule. Viva la difference!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
