"Allowed" Foods?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'm curious about the foods we can and can't eat. I know for a while it's really restricted, and I know carbonation is a no no....and I heard certain fats can make you sick. Is there anything else we can't have?

My surgeon did not provide any foods I cannot eat. I just can't eat very much. He did restrict carbonation for 3 months post op and coffee for 6 weeks post op. i was also advised bread may not agree with me if it is not toasted (it actually doesn't bother me at all) He also worked with me and my nutritionist to educate about food choices, but there is nothing I cannot eat.

I eat a pretty clean diet of whole foods, no refined sugars or starches. I have chosen not to eat rice, Pasta, or bread of any kind any longer, but that was on me. It was not a medical requirement.

Your doctor will likely have his/her own requirements.

My rules personally are 1) no soda or carbination ever!!!! 2) keep sugar low 3) keep protien at 60+ a day and keep carbs to less than half 4) cals under 700 a day

I am 12 weeks post op and unfortunately i have a sleeve of steel meaning i can eat it all no problems, its not so mch as whats a no no its more of what will help you out the most. I made the commitment that if it doesnt follow the gram of protien per 10 cals I dont eat it, or if its not helping me out its a no go and i dont do carbs i have little to none. I am down 68 pounds in 12 weeks so im doing something right.

Thank you both for your replies!

Apelt001, That's is amazing you're down 68 lbs in 12 weeks! Congratulations! Also nice to have a "steel sleeve" lol I can see how that can be a blessing and a curse. But, it must be nice being able to know you can eat anything without it making you sick....and you are in control of what you actually eat. I just kept hearing so many different things about what we can and can't eat, I wasn't sure. Thanks for the input :)

No problems you can do it, youll learn quickly whats allowed for your sleeve and not. Try new things veggies, marinades, cheeses yogurts. I am still having fun with those to keep things fresh and non repeatative! Youll do just fine keep posting and if you need any future advice you know where you can ask! Bestof luck

Never got a list to avoid except for carbonated beverages (for good) and alcohol (a year). Basically was told that high fatty food and overly sugary foods may cause some nausea. So far, both have caused me to be a bit queasy, but nothing terrible. I did have a problem with eggs right after surgery which is common. But that has since gone away. I pretty much can eat what ever I want, but smaller quantities.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
