Luquid Diet Survival: Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I am starting to prepare for surgery and I am wanting to prepare my body for the liquid diet. Can any of you post surgery sleevers give me some of your best suggestions, other than broth and protien shakes? Are fruit smoothies an option? Maybe frozen into pops? PLEASE give me some tips!

I'm not post op...but my doc gave me the following info regarding what "clear liquids" are. fruit smoothies would not be an option because they are fruit...and most folks add yogurt to those. If you were to add fruit to something...that would be in the "puree" stage.

Here's what's in my post op instructions:

ABSOLUTELY no solid food!!! Clear Liquids consist of: sugar-free Jell-O, sugar-free Crystal Light, Propel Water, Protein Water by Kellogg’s, sugar-free popsicles, clear chicken, beef or vegetable broth, water, Decaf tea, unsweetened apple grape or cranberry juice.

** A high quality Protein supplement such as Isopure or unjury (made of whey Isolate protein)

should be used in order to obtain approximately 70 grams of protein per day.

I am on my last day of liquids and I have surgery tomorrow. I have been doing sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicle's, flavored water mix, diet juices that you dilute 1/2 and 1/2. homemade chicken noodle Soup broth ( so much better than store bought) for a sugar craving I have been using sugar free dessert gum. hope that helps a little :) Good Luck!

I wish I could help but I hardly survived. I was so tired of broth and Jello. So I lived on sf popsicles and Water. I couldn't have Protein Shakes. I was on a 4 week pre opt diet before. So I was going crazy by surgery. And I only lost 4 lbs during pre-opt. LOL.

Just keep reminding yourself that this is only temporary. Say it over and over. That's how I survived the pre-surgery liquid diet and first two weeks after surgery.

pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4

In phase 1 post op, can you add Protein powder to the clear liquids?

I was told that Protein Powder or shakes start with "full liquids" There are a lot of different instructions post-op. I came out of the hospital on full liquids so I could have Protein Shakes, sugar free pudding, Plain yogurt. Will you be on full liquids or Clear liquids when you come home?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
