Those of you with toddlers...

Recommended Posts

I'll be 1 week post op tomorrow. My first 5 days post op were spent in TJ and I'm just getting back to my precious 30lb 2 1/2 baby girl :)

I've been instructed not to lift anything over 25lbs for 6 weeks. Since she refuses to get into the car herself this pretty much keeps me from going anywhere without help (which I have 75% of the time).

What activity/lifting restrictions were given to you by your surgeon?

Has anyone developed a leak they suspected was caused by lifting heavy objects?

Any tips on surviving 6 weeks with a busy toddler you can't pick up?

Hi!!

I have a little girl as well. I was told no lifting for 6 weeks as well, but I was told to listen to my body. Surgeon said at 3-4 weeks I could sit on the floor.

My no lifting limits lasted way longer than this because I developed a leak. I followed the rules to a T.

I was also told no bending. No pushing either, which meant no walks with the stroller. :(

I was hospitalized most of the time. However, I just did what I could with my daughter. I tried to focus on anything and everything I could do with her, rather than what I couldn't do. I sat on the floor with her ASAP and played.

I wish I had more to share. I know it's tough!! Hang in here!! Things will get easier. I had to take advantage of all the help!!

Best,

Sannah

Mine said 2 weeks, bc I said I had a 30lb one yr old. And at 2 weeks I started lifting him they said try not to bend down and pick him all the way up, try not to use stomach muscles. Anyway I did fine and at 3 weeks my husbands vacation was over and I was alone with all 3 kids and I was fine but everyone is different.

Hi!

This was my biggest worry before surgery.

I have a 5 year old daughter and a 1.5 year old son who I would have to carry for something or the other. My doc told me 3 months which ends for me next week. I lifted him today for the first time. It's hard when you can't hold them or lift them when they fall.

Try to get someone to help out. 6 weeks isn't that long.

Good luck

I don't have children, and my leak was not caused by lifting too much. But I did manage to tear an internal stitch just from bending the wrong way (I'm an acrobat when I sleep.) The ripped stitch added 4 more weeks to my lifting restrictions.

First 3 weeks, no more than 10lbs.

Next 3 weeks, no more than 20lbs.

Then 4 more weeks no more than 20lbs. Sorry. Forgot that part :)

I'm nervous about this too. I have a 4 year old and a 10 month old. My husband can't take off more then one day, and my mom is taking off a week. After the first week I'm on my own with the kids. I have no idea how I'm going to do it!

Same with me. My mom is coming for a week from miami and I live in nj. Which means that I am all by myself after that. Maybe I should just move her to a toddler bed. I being thinking about this for a while. I am being sleeve next week. Good luck to you

I was told nothing over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. I think it would be VERY tough to have the surgery with a young child that wants/needs to be lifted or carried.

I have twins nearly 2 years old. I was told nothing over 20 pounds for at least 4 weeks. I let them climb on me. Hubby took care of baths and running errands with them. Now at 4 weeks out I only put them.down for naps. In the beginning. I would get them out of their crib by putting one leg over at a time. They would hold on and get down.

I love this idea! I have pretty sever fibro and sometimes I can't even lift my little dogs (one 7lbs and one 13-15lbs.). I've been scared about a crib for years! Even with the sides dropped, on a bad day I couldn't do it. Not with newborns/smaller babies. But once they hit 30lbs I was freaking out. You have no clue how much happier you just made me! Thank you so much for this!

So glad to help! I cried when they were reaching and crying, but they liked climbing out of the crib...they like climbing on anything, LOL

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
