Self-advancement of diet?

Recommended Posts

I feel like I'm starving 6 days out. Any suggestions? Has anyone self advanced their diet stage? Thanks!

I wouldn't advance until your doc gives the go ahead.

Is that code for: I want to cheat? LMFAO Thanks for that one, I'm writing it down: Self-advancement of diet

And yes, I was a self-advancer. I took teeny bites (less than 1/2 teaspoon) of different things to see if my stomach would tolerate them.

A couple of things, first most likely you are experiencing head hunger or you have a fair amount of gas/acid in your gut that feels like hunger but really isn't. Are you taking a PPI? Most Drs will prescribe something for the first few months post op that will address this. There are also OTC meds you can get. The last thing you want to do is eat at this point. Your stomach needs time to heal, not to work. Staying on your nutritional plan, set up by your Dr. and your nutritionist is the best way for you to achieve the kind of success you need. This is all part of the process of healing and getting healthy. You aren't starving at this point, not really.

Are you taking a PPI? If you are, you may need a different one. Hunger at that stage can be acid rather than true hunger. There is also great variation in the recommended diet at your stage. What are you allowed to eat right now? Many people advance their diets but not usually at 6 days. You are in a dangerous place to do that. Your stomach is raw on the inside and your nerves have not really healed. You have a lot of inflammation. You should not do anything without checking with your doctor.

Ohhhh, you're not gonna get much support on this forum to "go against doctor's orders"!! Many forum wars have been foraged over what we can eat, when we can eat it, and what we MUST NEVER. EAT. AGAIN. To which I say, "Whateva! I do what I want!" (anyone get the South Park reference? haha)

While I think head hunger and reflux are valid points to keep in mind, I think ultimately this is your body and you should do what feels right for you. You'd probably only be able to have a bite of something anyway. Keep it soft and chew well, I think you'd be fine. But only IF you really feel you must. If you can, try to put it off another day to get closer to what your surgeon has recommended for you.

The post op diets I've read about and seen posted about here are so varied from surgeon to surgeon - there are surgeons who put you on a soft diet within days of surgery and others who want you on liquids for weeks, so I don't think you're in danger of hurting yourself with a tiny spoonful of soft scrambled eggs or something soft like that.

Good luck!

It's one thing to "cheat" but is quite a different situation when you need to let you stomach heal.

Please give it a bit more time your stomach is much to fragile and numb right now to handle "real" food.< /p>

to the OP - did you do a pre-op liquid diet? I'm doing one now, for 2 wks prior to surgery. My hunger was gone after the first week. Just curious if you did a pre-op diet, if you had hunger up to the surgery date?

I don't know about the OP, but I was ravenous on the pre-op diet. But after surgery, no hunger at all. It was not the same for me at all.

Hey guys, heck yes, I want to cheat. But, I won't. I did only a week of 2 shakes and dinner. Maybe that wasn't enough. I don't think I could eat anything I shouldn't either. I'm just not ready. You guys rock! Xoxo

That's awesome to hear! I'm glad you are hanging in there.. Watch, in no time your stomach will be healed and you will be able to eat again,

Except it will be little itty bitty amounts and you will be stuffed :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
