I'm guilty of saying the exact same thing when my mom told me a family friend had gastric bypass. It was totally unfair of me - 1) it's her business, and obviously she was "big enough" and 2) I haven't seen her in years to know how heavy she got or to see her now that she's had the RNY AND her Tummy Tuck. My mom says she looks great, but was also surprised because she didn't seem "big enough" to her, either.

Even still, I'd never SAY that to someone. My opinion on her being big or small ultimately only has to do with ME and how I feel about MYSELF in comparison. It was actually a wake up call for me to see that I'm quite a lot heavier than she was and was questioning if this was something I had to do.

As someone who's only told a few people about my upcoming surgery, I'm surprised by how much it upsets me that people who I've told are SO EXCITED for me to have this. I read between the lines and interpret that as them saying, "It's about time you did SOMETHING!" even if that's not what's said. For me, I have to learn to stop being so sensitive about my weight issues. It's not like it's something I can hide - I can't hide my size now, and people WILL notice when I start losing in big numbers... I have to learn to deal with the reactions!

Has anyone ever been asked "are you big enough for that?" When u told someone about you decision??? Idky that bothers me' date=' but it does! It's like, duh I'm big enough, I weigh 257 pounds!!![/quote']

I have had a few of my friends say that also. I think they look at me through rose colored glasses. I'm 100 pounds over weight so I definitely need it. Also I have health issues. Really I guess it's a compliment. But...sometimes in the support groups I am the smallest one there...even after a few have already had the surgery. But I know that does not mean I don't need to be sleeved.

Yes! HW 193, SW 186 weight on Monday 172. Everyone kept telling me I was too small for WLS. Even the darn Anesthesiologist!!!!!!! I was like, "Mr... I HAD the lapband and got close to my goal weight (I got to 150 lbs) but my band was removed in April 2013 because it slipped twice. I didn't want to get back to 214 lbs at 5'2. Yes I carried it well but I want to get off my blood pressure meds and not become diabetic. If the insurance approved it why do people care?

No one has asked me. I'm actually glad. Strange, isn't it? Should I be offended that its not their response? Maybe. But like everything in this process, it's all bass ackwards. The local Nut told me "You don't have diabetes or HTN, that's too bad". WHAT? Well I don't qualify for insurance, but I'm healthy and fat ( if there is really any such thing). This is what I mean, when I'm glad my peeps aren't telling me I'm too thin.

The local docs that aren't doing my surgery say I should get it done before I develop the comorbidities that are likely (statistically)to develop if I continue to be unable to loose and maintain a healthy weight.

This solution is for me, it is about me having a long healthy life. I love my friends and extended family, and I am happy to educate them if I hear objection. it is only due to their genuine concern, more than judgement.

ppl have said im not big, or everytime id keep it 100 and say i was fat, they'd be like youre not fat. and im like look, u dont have to appease me. im morbidly obese and i know this. i dont kno what you see, but all these rolls are made out of fat! lol i guess in some ways its a good thing because they see me for me and not my weight. but lets call and apple an apple. yes boo, im near 200 lbs and way under 5' tall. so this procedure is necessary in more ways than one. #my2cents :)

I get this comment a LOT! I am 5'9", so I have stretched 256 pounds over a large frame. Even the HR lady at my job, when I went to get FMLA paperwork- said "I can't believe you are having that surgery". I finally started answering with "I'm 33 years old, I have a BMI over 37%, I take 2 blood pressure meds, 3 cholesterol meds, my dad had a fatal heart attack at 40, and 7 more years is not enough for me to be with my daughter and husband". They usually agree that I am making an excellent decision. ;)

I get it, and it seems like the people asking are almost angry about it. I'm (barely) 5' and 223, but nobody believes me when I tell them that! I'm not that little...I don't get it.

Yes, I've had this happen with most people that I told. I'm 5'6, 230 pounds with an apple shape and full face. I guess I hide my weight pretty well, but for me this decision has been motivated by a heart condition, being exhausted all the time, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a lot of cancer & diabetes in my family. My cardiologist said I needed to lose 100 pounds. I cried when he told me that because I think in my food addicted mind, I thought I wasn't 't that bad either. The truth is, I'm on bad shape and my health is at risk and I just pray that once I have surgery, it will be the answer to my prayers.

I've actually been asked that a few times. I am very tall and I guess I carry my weight well. Most people had no idea what I really weighed...and that's ok. I just took it as a compliment' date=' but I still had my sleeve and 7 weeks later I know I made the best decision for me!!

[/quote']

Congrats :))

How tall are you

I went for my 2 week checkup and they guy behind me sd HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN. i sd 2weeks. he said U MUST BE OUT OF YOUR MIND U R GOING TO BE A BONE I DONT WANNA BE THAT SMALL. i felt awful then the other patients looked at me like i didnt belong there. Tho my bmi was at 39 along w other medical issues and im 5"7. I felt terrible like i was being self centered and shld hv tried harder to loose weight w out the sleeve. How ever i got home and tried on some 16-18 and they slid right on. So im happy i made the choice and that my insurance and dr agreed it was a great choice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
