Living with a gourmet chef

Recommended Posts

Sometimes it is a blessing (rave) and a curse (rant) to live with a gourmet chef wife as a post op. she really loves cooking and loves to share her masterpieces with others ( her love language).

As a post op, there is a definite focus that is required to stay on plan and live that healthy and active lifestyle. It is so hard sometimes. For example, this morning it is a curse (rant) that she made some apple crisp dessert for her plant sale she is going to. It has layers of brown sugar crisp, cream cheese, apple pie filling, crumb top and caramel embellishments on top. Made from scratch of course. Oh how I want a piece! She even left some here for my brother while she is off at the event today. Going to stay strong though because I made it this far with being a good post op eater. Hard!!

It is also a blessing (rave) that she can make gourmet healthy dishes. For example last night we had a chicken curry casserole that has chicken, cream of mushroom, Indian spices, chile pepper chopped broccoli and a few other ingredients. Typically, we used to eat that with rice and cheddar cheese on top. however, I now can eat about 1/3 a cup of this dish without the rice and cheese and get high Protein, good veggie serving and it is full of yummy Indian flavor. My wife and brother eat it with the rice and cheese. She is also very good at making other healthy gourmet dishes.

I'm a Chef for a living and it can be hard at times, but I do have to taste things to make sure they taste right. I thought for myself it would be a lot harder than it has been. So far so good. The aroma of fresh bake bread makes me want a piece but I still have resisted it at 3.5 months out. Bread was always my down fall.

Keep up the self control, it is hard but we will succeed.

Fiddle walk away from the crisp!! If I can't have some neither can you!! :P

Oh and fresh baked bread MY DOWNFALL!!

There is a place in Pescadero that sells artichoke garlic herb bread that they continuously bake all day..

Our favorite thing to do is to pick up a hot loaf and go to the beach o_o

Won't be doing that for a while :(

It is still there. I say it needs legs and needs to walk away. :)

Part of the reason I'm here, is because of years in the food business. It is tough to be a chef and at the same time, struggle with bad eating decisions. I keep a supply of small tasting spoons in the sleeve of my chef's jacket and try to limit what I taste. I no longer eat the staff meal or I take a few minutes to make my own meal out of the nights menu. It is hard being around food all day and not want to dive in. At home, I cook what I need to eat and that part is easy, it is work that it is the hardest.

That's some awesome self-control! That apple crisp would be calling my name, even if I only had a bite.

Kudos to her for supporting / sharing her love language with you in a healthier way. Kudos to you for staying strong when she shares her love of cooking w/others who are not as diligent about their health.

She has been so supportive in all things post op since I first wanted to have surgery. I could not have been successful without her. Soon it will be her turn to be a post op in July and my turn to support her.

The way you described the apple crisp I think I can smell it! Good job not having any of it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
