Can't stop losing

Recommended Posts

Well if she has done a good job for you follow her advice. I eat full fat food and i do have calorie dense foods like nuts and cheese....I need the energy for an active life. Part of it is that i have chosrn to moderate carbs and not worry about fat or calories...working so far.

Just spoke with NUT' date=' she said absolutely do not add high calorie foods. She suggested maybe add one more snack of something like low fat string cheese. and 1 or 2 extra bites at meals, if I can.[/quote']

Holy cow if I had hair I'd pull it out. Low fat string cheese? ?? There are so many choices that will slide down your sleeve much easier and are healthier than that. It sounds like your nut is afraid if you change anything you'll start packing in the pounds. Indeed that is always a risk but eventually you'll have to make some significant changes if you don't stop losing. And the answer isn't more diet food.

Whole milk, guacamole, full fat cheese, eggs instead of egg beaters. All healthy, all higher in calories and all will slide down your sleeve quite easily. If nothing else, you can always break rule number 1 and start drinking with your meals. This will at least allow you to eat again sooner. You don't need to eat junk food but it sounds like your NUT is stuck in diet mode.

It's difficult because as you change to maintenance everything becomes super scary - it seems regain is right around every corner. Until you eat sufficient calories to maintain, you will keep losing. I know that sounds so simple, but turning things around is stressful!

Your nutritionist has given you info that encourages a very strict approach that probably appeals to the part of you so terrified of a regain. Other VSTers have made suggestions regarding helping you to stop weight loss by increasing calories - its scary though. Essentially you need to evaluate objectively what will happen if you follow your NUT's advice, and whether it is what you want.

Keep in mind the implications of being underweight - according to my doc the mortality rate increases similar to what it would be if you were obese. That was a wake up for me - no way did I work so hard to lose the weight just to give myself the same bad health I was trying to leave behind.

Just take a step back and consider your options. Think about the rate of your loss, how many weeks that gives you before you become underweight with your current eating habits, and at what point you will make a change. Think about how many weeks you might need to figure out the right combo if you start adding calories slowly.

Good luck -

Mary

I agree I have been trying to stop for two weeks now. I have increased my caloric intake, and added more snacks(all healthy), I continue to lose. I'm at a healthy BMI and would like to stop losing but in my mind i think that if I'm not losing I must be gaining . I will up my calories this week again in hopes of finding the middle ground.

Me thinks her nut might Be a nut, Andy :P

Not sure if you're trying to be funny, but that comes out sounding rude AND not at all helpful

Nut says that with time, my stomach will be able to accommodate more, which is why she prefers we eat fat free or low fat foods. It's easier to start good habits now, than to change them later.

I hope you're able to get this resolved soon. I think my point is just that alot of people (including my NUT) don't see low fat and no fat foods as a healthy alternative because usually, in processed foods, they take out the dietary fat and replace it with sugar....which is harmful to your health. Dietary fat, on the other hand, isn't unhealthy at all, it's just higher in calories which seems like what you need.

True. But your stomach has been adjusting since the day it was turned into a tiny new tummy. And until it's fully "relaxed" you'll keep losing using low fat/low cal options, putting you in the underweight category. It takes the sleeve anywhere from 6months to 2 years to reach its full relaxed state.

BTB also put into words what I couldn't :) full fat dairy, etc are healthy fats. Not synthetic substitutes made in a lab. A long term diet of low fat foods and low cal options can do more damage than one would think. Cheeses and margarine contain plastic, low cal foods are super high in sodium. Our goal in maintenance is to learn to eat "real" food in a healthy manner.

I am not a Doc, but thought of this when I read your post... Rabbit Starvation

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation

Others who have had a hard time stopping the loss (not me) here have said eat avocado, full fat milk and dairy and nuts... add a snack or meal.... All low fat Protein can lead to starvation.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
