Showing Excess skin on video & denial by insurance

Recommended Posts

Hey all, during the last few months, I have gotten a few dozen emails and messages of people asking me about my loose skin, and if I can make a video showing them. Well after much debate and over night thinking, I went ahead and made the video. Didnt upload it right away as I needed to sleep on it. please know, that I have never taken my shirt off in public due to me being ashamed of my previous weight (565), and now due to my excess skin, i feel even more subconscious. I However got denied once for reconstructive surgery....in the video ill explain in detail, please watch, rate, comment and subscribe.

I thank you all for your support.

I totally get how you feel. If I have extra skin I will feel worse than being fat but at least you are getting healthy! Does your insurance not cover it period or did they not think you really needed it?

I applaud you on your success with your weight loss, thank you for sharing something that is obviously painful for you. I think you look awesome and much more healthy.

I hope that you can get the insurance company to change their minds and give you an approval for this procedure.

What if you talk to your surgeon and they were able to submit reasons such as inflammation from the excess skin and possibility for skin break down from the rubbing. My insurance so far has been approving WLS patients for plastic surgery to remove the excess skin. Good luck and congratulations!! You look awesome!

Congrats on your wiebght loss, that is awesome. I am the same as you as I never take my shirt off in public. I was always embarassed the way I looked. I still have about 60-70 lbs to go and my Doctor said I will have excess skin. I'm lucky in a way that in Manitoba they cover the surgery if you losse more then 130lbs from what I understand. They don't cover wieght loss surgery I had to pay on my own. I hope you get approved and can have that taken care of. Good luck and keep us informed.

Insurance companies suck!!! And the sad part is we pay them. I was denied 3 times for my surgery saying I was not morbid obese. Really! What the hell y'all looking at. Keep fighting. Had my surgery Monday. Don't give up that's what they want you to do

That took a lot of courage to share with us and post. I am so proud of your accomplishments. But please don't be ashamed, you have worked so hard! I have to say though, that your surgery is medically necessary, and I stan behind you 100%, not that you need me too! You are so amazing to have come this far, that I am so glad you are not giving up. This was an amazing video and I applaud you on your courage and success!!

I know that I am going to have a lot of excess skin - I started out at 450. I'm pretty scared about the idea of plastic surgery, but think I will probably want it when I reach my goal.

I've heard from many people who've had the plastic, that insurance will need pictures of rashes, etc. that you get because of the excess skin. Now, being a large person, I've always tried to keep myself scrupulously clean, and even use antiperspirant in all those extra creases and flaps to keep it from becoming a breeding area for bacteria and fugal infections, so that I don't get rashes. But if I decide to have plastic surgery and have a problem getting approved by my insurance, I might just stop with the anti-moisture battle long enough to get 'evidence' that it is medically necessary!

You are very brave to show it all. Thank you for sharing with all of us. I hope your insurance will change their decision!

I have done an awesome job with ur weight loss. Congrats! I hope u appeal the denial and have ur PLastic surgeon document any and all rashes from this day on. Please insist that the rashes and sores are shown in pics to provide evidence. In fact I would send this YouTube clip for them to see. It couldn't hurt. Thank u for sharing with us.

Insurance companies do suck. But I am going through the appeal as we speak, im getting those letters put together, having this video put into a DVD disc, weigh in charts pre and post op, and print outs of all the comments from my supporters including the article columbia presbyterian did on me last year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
