How soon after surgery have u been able to start on a Protein Shake? On 3 days post op and have only drank Water. I tried an Atkins shake a bit ago and am worried this is not ok.

It depends on the instructions from your bariatric team. I was started on Protein Shakes as soon as I left the hospital. It took me all day to get my first one down. Eventually they wanted us up to 64oz of Water and 60g of Protein from the shakes. Primary goal was the Fluid.< /p>

Thanks Andi. What type of shake did you use? I just tried an Atkins ( which I love ). And it is not sitting well at all. The only thing I have had for 3 days is Water

I started as soon as I left hospital also, but I made it with Water and nothing else. I stayed as close to Clear Liquids as I could for the first week.

I wasn't started on Protein Shakes until two weeks post op. It all depends on your surgeon and his/her recommendations.

I wasn't able to do the shakes till about the 5th day. I couldn't eat anything up to that point. I like the EAS Carb Control chocolate shakes from Wal-Mart.

I was actually started on Protein Shakes while I was still in the hospital the day after surgery. I was initially using the Bariatric Advantage brand mixed with Water, I have since used the EAS advantage and Atkins brand premades which are both low carb which is good.

Best shake that's worked for me has been a Trader Joe's Soy (quick dissolve) vanilla Protein Powder. I had a bit of a harder time when it came to the whey type that I tried (although when I had to bite the bullet and finish up the tub of it, using half unsweetened almond milk really helped). The Trader Joe's one doesn't taste great.. nor horrible (sugar free Syrup fixes it right up) but it's a lot easier going down for me.

I really like the Muscle Milk chocolate shake.

I love muscle milk but the vanilla one! I can drink it room temp or cold!

I'm going to try muscle milk tomorrow. Had Jello today and broth for dinner. This really sucks as my taste buds are screaming. It's all in the retraining and no regrets but having a tough time today and craving everything. Sniffle

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
