60% loss of excess weight?

Recommended Posts

I had my first appt yesterday. Loking at surgery around late summer. The nurse told me I should expect to lose 60%of my excess weight. I am female and 245 pounds as of now (my highest weight). She said I should expect to get to 185 pounds. To me that's still big considering my ideal weight according to the nurse is 145. I was hoping to get to at least 150--or less. Does this sound realistic? I'm kind of discouraged.....

Yeah, that's just averages... I am 6 months out and have already passed 60%. It's more about what you do after surgery, don't be discouraged it can be done and is done just look at all the before and after pictures on this website!

Good Luck!

That's just an average so you're not upset if you don't lose more than that. I'm only 7 weeks out from surgery and have already lost over 50% of my excess weight. If you follow the nutritional recommendations and do some exercising, there is no reason you can't get down to your ideal weight.

"Realistic" is completely dependent on you. The number I typically hear as an average is 70%, your surgeon is probably being a bit conservative.

Once you have the sleeve you will likely lose 60-70% of your excess body fat with ought much or any effort. You can continue to lose as much as you like by continuing to follow a healthy diet & exercising. It's really up to you. To steal a phrase from the 12 step world "it works if you work it".

I was told 60-70% but everyone varies. Like the PP said, it's really up to me as to how much I'll lose.

Thanks everyone! I see all the before and after pics-which are awesome btw-and know alot of sleevers are losing more. I guess they don't want to give false hopes which I can understand. I will work that sleeve for all I can! I am ready to feel healthy and thin!!

It all depends on your focus and desire to eat and exercise according to WLS plan. You will find it will be easier and easier to be active as the months go by. 60% is average. I lost 100% or 180 lb during month 7 and am almost to month 10 now. Where there is a will there is a way as the saying goes. Keep your eye on the prize!

My doc said, "if you want to lose 100% you will". And I will!

You can definitely lose 100% of your excess weight! I am 13 months out and I am down 85% of the 124 lbs that would put me at a "normal" BMI. I personally only aim to lose another 5-10 lbs and not the full 19 pounds that would put me at a BMI of 27 vs 25. Good luck and happy losing to all!!

Where does one find out how much they are "supposed" to weigh?

Check the standard BMI chart for your height and it will give you a healthy range.

Your ideal weight would give you a BMI of 25 or less. There are lots of free online BMI calculators. Also ask your doctor. Some feel that maintaining a BMI of less than 25 is an unrealistic goal so will give you a better idea.

The statistic of 60% is usually that this amount of weight loss can be attributed to the surgery alone. Obviously those that exercise and follow the life style change will have better than average results.

I went from 223 to 150 in 3 months. Eating has become a constant chore instead of enjoyable. If I don't consciously think to eat every 2 hours i would never eat, not ever hungry. I am 5'11 and look way to thin at 150 pounds. I am mostly glad i had the surgery and losing too much weight is not usually a problem, as in my case, but it can happen. Just remember, If you have an active lifestyle or take one up after surgery you need more calories to maintain a normal body weight and that is hard to achieve with the new smaller stomach. Good luck!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
