Possible experimental procedure

Recommended Posts

Hello all -

My mom has a friend who has had weight loss surgery, she is sadly quite ill as a result. Out of concern my mom came to me trying to understand what procedure hd been done and if it was like the one I had. She described it as a procedure where they wrap the stomach around the esophagus. I told her no it was nothing like my surgery, I had VSG but I would research it and let her know what I could find. well I find nothing that fits that description anywhere. So, I am posting here in hopes it might sound familiar to someone here and I can put a name to the procedure they did.

Thanks!

Yep I've heard of it. My nieces husband had it done. It's called a fundoplication and its a treatment for gastric reflux. Here's a link. http://www.m.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/fundoplication-surgery-for-gastroesophageal-reflux-disease-gerd

is it that POSE surgery? I can't even tell what it is, but it's incisionless, done through an endoscopy.

Primary Obesity Surgery, Endoluminal

Seriously, no clue on what this surgery actually is.

It sounds like she had Gastroesophageal Reflux Surgery. This is a surgery to treat GERD. It can cause weight loss after surgery because of being on a liquid diet and necessary dietary changes to treat GERD, but to my knowledge, it is not used as a weight loss surgery. As stated it above, that is a surgery for GERD/reflux. It is not an approved procedure for weight loss.

found this: http://www.glamour.com/health-fitness/2012/04/weight-loss-would-you-have-shocking-new-surgery-to-lose-just-25-pounds

It sounds like a sleeve without physically removing the stomach, and probably not as small as the sleeve. I would think this could stretch over time... and would be best suited for people who want to lose 50 lbs or less.

From that article:

And POSE is less extreme than gastric bypass; though it does require full anesthesia, no scalpels are used. (Instead, a surgeon inserts an endoscope through the mouth to reach the stomach, then folds the stomach lining over and closes it with anchor stitches. The whole procedure takes about 45 minutes.) Patients of gastric bypass and Lap-Band must meticulously monitor their diet postsurgery for the rest of their life. (Typically, sweet and greasy foods are bad news for gastric bypass patients; bread and steak can be a problem for those with Lap-Band.) POSE patients, in contrast, can eat what they want, just less of it, says Dr. Lavin.

Thanks for the feedback! Maybe it is the one for Gerd it sure sounds like closer to the description then anything I found. It is my understanding that this was done primarily as a weight loss procedure but then again my moms giving me the info second hand and that's never the best way. Now at least I have a reasonable explanation to tell her about what her friend is going through.

Its called a gastric fundoplasty or "nissan". I had this procedure 15 years ago for GERD. I lost 40 pounds just because I couldn't eat. But, obviously since I'm on here as a VSG post-op its not a long term weight loss surgery by any means. And my surgeon that did my VSG told me that the nissan is only good for 10 years max. He said my previous surgery was almost undone and had a mess of scar tissue he had to remove. Another adversity with that surgery is that I haven't been able to throw up in 15 years. (Super fun with morning sickness & dry heaving) so now that its been undone hopefully my body can do what its gotta do.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
