Nexium Post-Op. Are swallowing capsules taboo?

Recommended Posts

I am Day 9 post-op. I had (still have) SEVERE GERDs pre-op for years. Have been on Nexium, but the surgeon switched me to Pepcid which was a TOTAL WASTE. I asked if I could go back to Nexium (left voicemail with surgeon's nurse). My pulmonologist that put me on it said I definitely need it, but to ask the surgeon. Surgeon's office never called me back. So, I went back on it and feel better. I've been opening the capsule and pouring it into pudding to swallow it. Not fun.

1. Is Nexium TABOO with VS?

2. Are capsules TABOO with VS? What are the ramifications for swallowing capsules?

3. If you take Nexium, do you just swallow the capsule, or take it another form?

Thanks for all the advice!

My surgeon prescribed nexium for me post op. Took them from the time I got home from the hospital, then on for the next 3 months. I don't think that your surgeon is going to object.

I hope I can still take my pills after being sleeved! I take alot of pills everyday (pain, sleep, reflux, thyroid, depression) and continued to take them with no problem after being banded 3 1/2 yrs ago.

You might want to be careful with emptying a pill into something. Some pills have to be taken whole, not crushed or it can either increase the effect or decrease it. Good luck!

I was sent home with Prilosec and was able to take my Vitamin D since day 5. Now I also take other Vitamins with absolutely no problems. I have not taken my Celebrex for my knee arthritis since before surgery to my surprise i have not needed them.

Started taking capsules under direction of my surgeon the day after surgery while still in the hospital. Never had any problems. My acid reducer, Multivitamin and Iron are all in capsule form.. My Calcium is in tablet form and I was told not to take the tablet until I was 2 weeks out, but yeah.. capsules were going down just fine at 1 day post op.

the only thing you need to use with caution after being sleeved are NSAIDs for prolonged periods of time because you will have a much higher risk of an ulcer with a smaller stomach.
