Did your surgeon require you to lose weight? Was it mandatory to lose a certain percentage or amount? If not, your preop diet is all that is important and is needed to shrink your liver so it won't be in the way during surgery and can easily be moved around without bleeding.

If we were successful at diets, we wouldn't need this surgery, so don't beat yourself up. Your new "tool" will help you from being able to yo-yo.

But do yourself a huge favor and do the preop diet as best you can. It will help you ween yourself off of carbs before surgery and you will feel better. (most people are on it for one or two weeks...some liquids only, some low carb...it's whatever your doctor/nutritionist has told you to do).

Just because you fail at "diets" before the sleeve, does not mean you won't be successful with the sleeve.

Oh boy...I feel your pain! I was told to lose at least 15 lbs but I've also been going up & down. I have a consultation appt with my surgeon on Friday & supposedly, if he sees I've gained weight, it's over. No surgery. WTH???? So I may be looking elsewhere to get my surgery. I have good insurance & it's a covered benefit so I can go just about to any WLS program but I've gone so far with this particular hospital. I understand the fact that it's best for surgery but I hope I can actually lose something before my surgery. This appt on Friday, supposedly, the doc will give me a surgery date. One of the many hoops I've had to jump thru....

I was 205 at my first appointment with my surgeon. My Nutritionist had me add carbs to my diet, saying everything should be eaten in moderation. The following month I weighed 213! It took me 4 months to lose those 8 pounds, and my pre-op weight was 203. Five months out, and I weigh 147.5. Point being, hang in there and it will come off. Try not to stress, and just make good choices. Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
