Coffee + Upper Stomach pains ?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

So I am almost 5 months out - I just drank half if a small mocha from caribou coffee (as a rare treat) over the course of an hour and now I am having the worst upper stomach pains- I have been on hold for 20 min for my doctor - I'm desperate - and please no lectures just advice or help if possible thank you.

No lecture here... I had the same thing happen and it was acid. I take Prilosec daily so I can enjoy my morning coffee.... I did switch to Decaf coffee.... However, I do have to take a daily acid pill. For me it is worth it!

Thank you! I know I am supposed to stay away from caffeine - but I'm a student and graduating in two weeks - so was trying to get through a lot of work. Anyways - I'm feeling somewhat better and just took some Prilosec and my mom already gave me a lecture so that's what the lecture part was about :P won't be drinking any caffeine again anytime soon.

I was told no caffeine for the first 2 months then after that I was told to go for it. I enjoy coffee several times a week. Did your doctor say no caffeine ever again? is that why you thought you would be lectured? Did your dr say that was the cause of your pain?

He said it was most likely a gall stone attack - since I still have mine - and caffeine can trigger it. And it was expresso technically- so it's stronger. He said at 4/5 months I could have caffeine but didnt suggest it.

Just in case anyone searches this thread in te future - and becomes confused like I was - It was a gallstone attack. Horribly uncomfortable even 6 hours later. Hot shower on my back had been the only thing that has helped.

BEWARE: Fats will trigger an attack in a heartbeat!! Even the smallest amount, depending on how far along the gallbladder is in its failing. Its more likely that it was whatever else was IN the mocha, not the necessarily the caffeine, but obviously, avoid ANYthing that he said could trigger it. It's a pain worse than childbirth with no drugs!!! I hope you get it fixed quickly.

Thank you, I'm feeling better, like I said I'm a college student, and graduating in two weeks - I am going to see him right when I get home - til then - he said to be VERY careful of everything I am eating - which honestly I follow the rules to a T and this is the first bad thing that has happened. The same thing actually happened to my mom when she was my age and she went through rapid weight loss - but thank you for all the advice!
