Protein bars

Recommended Posts

Never been big on the bars. I tried Quest and they were just okay. They are way better if you microwave them for a couple of seconds. I've got a box of Pure Proteins now. I like'm but will only eat them in the AM since they really can get you wanting more crap. They are, like OTR said, just dressed up candy bars. If I am super busy or don't have time to make food, I will grab a bar but they would never be my go to source for proteins. Right now I am trying to get most of my Protein from food. I am limiting the shakes to no more than 3-4 a week and hopefully can get that down to zero before too long.

I agree with OTR on the glorified candy bar aspect. My favorites are nu go, but I had to give them up because 1) caused me to want more and 2) stalled out my weight loss. I still have them around, but treat them as the exception rather then the rule. The one exception I am making is for paleo bar after a cross fit workout. These are high calories (300), but my body seems to process them better then the low carb Protein bars. I definitely need the fuel that these provide post work out. Otherwise, I no longer eat a Protein Bar for snack.< /p>

  • I was at my wits end so I bought two Isopure. I tried fruit punch or a red punch...you would think great but wow what an awful aftertaste. I thought I was going to gag. Now Its like a mental block in my head on them. What kind did you like??

Personally, before my obese days began and I was into fitness, I consumed lots of whey protien products, so I can tolerate the taste because I've tasted much worse. I personally like the grape and pineapple; however, someone posted this about Isopure:

"Each 20 ounce bottle has 160 calories, 40 grams of Protein, no carbohydrates, no fats and no sugar. Isopure comes in a wide variety of flavors, including grape frost (which I think tastes a lot like grape Kool-Aid), alpine punch (which is like fruit punch), passion fruit, blue raspberry, icy orange, pineapple orange banana, mango peach and apple melon. Sometimes I mix the Isopure ready to drink Protein drinks with other things. For instance, I mix the passion fruit Isopure with sugar free lemonade or mix the grape frost Isopure with sugar free grape Kool-Aid to boost the flavor. The variety keeps me from getting bored with my Protein Drinks. I keep them refrigerated and often serve them over ice, as well, as I find they taste much better when they are very cold. Some people seem to really love some flavors while really disliking others, so I suggest you try more than one.

Isopure is not my favorite Protein supplement; I think there are others that taste better. It's my favorite ready to drink supplement, though. I find it has a slight metallic aftertaste, which seems common with these types of ready to drink protein supplements. The metallic aftertaste is much less noticeable in Isopure than in some other brands like Cytomax, at least as far as I'm concerned. I don't love the taste, but it's tolerable to me. I also like the fact that these drinks are relatively low in calories and are sugar free. In addition, I like the fact that all the protein in these drinks comes from whey protein isolate, which is lactose free and highly absorbable."

I have found that the Nature Valley Peanut and Dark chocolate bars are quite acceptable. My nutritionist and dietician both agree that they are the best tasting ones out there. At 160 calories, 25 (I think) grams of Protein and only 7 grams of sugar. Certainly they are better than most of the protein bars on the market.

Another pretty good tasting one,in my opinion, is the Supreme Protein Carb Conscious Bars. It yields 210 calories, 6 grams of sugar, and is infused with different Vitamins and minerals, as well as Calcium. My favorite flavor is the original flavor, Carmel cookie crunch. You can buy a box of 9 from ProSource for about $11 bucks: http://www.prosource.net/

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
